India, a place where women empowerment is considered crucial for its development, the appearing of 100 businesswomen in the ‘Kotak Wealth Hurun – Leading Wealthy Women 2018’ list of Kotak Wealth Management is definitely a proud moment. It is a compilation of the India’s 100 wealthiest Indian women based on their net worth as on 30th June, 2018. The list is an evidence to the fact that this world is not just about men, women too are equally contributing significantly to India’s economy.

Most of the women appearing in the list belong to the country’s biggest business houses like Roshni Nadar, Sangita Jindal, etc., but there are exceptions like Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder of Biocon. Eight women with Padma Award have also made it to the list. The cities of Mumbai and Delhi individually have hosted a total of 25 rich women who appeared on the list, followed by 14 women from Bengaluru. As per the survey, the total wealth of the first three women in the list – Smitha V Crishna of Godrej group, Roshni Nadar of HCL, and Indu Jain of Bennett Coleman and Co. Group- exceeds the GDP of 68 countries worldwide. The list has the most entrants from the pharmaceutical sector comprising of 22 percent women, 18 percent from software services, and more than 8 percent women from the food and beverages industry.

The top 10 wealthiest women that appeared in the list are as follows-

1. Smitha V Crishna, the third-generation successor of the Godrej Empire, tops the list of the richest Indian women with a whopping wealth of Rs. 37,570 crore. She sits on the the board of directors while possessing a total of one-fifth share in the Godrej group. She came to the limelight back in 2014 when she purchased the bungalow of Dr. Homi J Bhabha worth Rs. 371 crore.

 

2. Roshni Nadar of HCL Technologies Limited stands second among the richest woman in India with a net worth of Rs 30,200 crore according to the Kotak Wealth-Hurun list. She hold the position of CEO and Executive Director at the HCL Technologies. Roshni is the daughter of the owner of HCL, Shiv Nadar and has been associated with the company since 2013. Currently, she is also managing the Shiv Nadar Foundation.

 

3. Indu Jain, the chairperson of the largest media group, Bennett Coleman & Co. Ltd., holds the third position in the Kotak Wealth-Hurun list with a total fortune worth Rs. 26,240 crore. She made an appearance in the list among the wealthiest women in India and is heading the famous magazine brands-The Economic Times and The Times of India.

 

4. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has earned the prestige of becoming the richest self-made woman businesswoman on the list. Biocon’s founder and Managing Director, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw stands at the fourth place in the list with a total net worth of Rs 24,790 crore. Interestingly, Shaw also owns a place on the board of Infosys. In 1978, she laid the foundations of Biocon as a bio-pharmaceutical company after which there was no looking back.

5. Kiran Nadar, wife of HCL founder Shiv Nadar, occupies the fifth spot in the Kotak Wealth-Hurun list with a total net worth of Rs 20,120 crore in 2018. She is a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation and the chairman of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.

 

 

6. Leena Gandhi Tewari, chairperson of the private healthcare provider USV Pharma, is standing at the sixth position on the list with a total wealth of Rs 10,730 crore.

 

7. Sangita Jindal, chairman of the JSW Foundation, is ranked at the seventh place with Rs 10,450 crore as the total net worth. She is the wife of Sajjan Jindal, heir of the JSW Group. Her organization runs social development projects in the name of JSW Group.

 

 

8. Jayshree Ullal, CEO of Arista Networks, is placed eighth in the list with a wealth of Rs. 9,490 crore. The company deals in the cloud-networking services.

 

 

9. Anu Aga, the erstwhile chairperson of Thermax, an engineering firm, is ranking at the ninth spot in the Kotak Wealth-Hurun list. Her estimated net worth as on June 30 this year was ₹8,550 crore. She joined the company in 1985 and acquired full control of the company in 1996 after her husband’s death.

 

10. Shradha Agarwal is the youngest women appearing at the tenth position in the Kotak Wealth-Hurun list. She is one of the founders and the President of Outcome Health, a healthcare technology company based in Chicago. Her total net worth in 2018 is Rs 8,200 crore.
