OPPO has had a good run in India and 2016 was a good year for the company. OPPO has positioned itself as a selfie-centric smartphone maker and has been riding the smartphone wave in India.

The company is now all set to launch the OPPO A57 in India on 3 February after a successful opening in China in November 2016. OPPO A57 is a phone that is going to delight selfie lovers and OPPO fans alike. 2016 saw the company deliver good numbers around the successful F1s and F1 Plus.

While the price is yet to be revealed, it is expected to be in the Rs 15,500 – Rs 16,500 range, in line with the China price of RMB 1,599 (Rs 16,000).

Let’s see what’s inside this selfie special

13-megapixel front camera with f/2.2 aperture is going to deliver those very slick and sharp selfies. The LED flash and PDAF will ensure terrific selfies and video chat in all conditions.

On the rear sits a 16-megapixel camera sporting a f/2.0 aperture and offering PDAF laser focus and LED flash. So picture enthusiasts can look forward to capturing some great moments with the front or rear camera. It’s a complete package and very handy to have around.

The OPPO A57 smartphone sports a sleek body with dimensions of 149.1 x 72.9 x 7.65 mm and weighs only 147 gms. The phone comes in two colour options – Rose Gold and Gold.

The face is a 5.2 inch HD LCD display resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, housed in a 2.5D Corning Gorilla curved glass screen.

The internal memory in the OPPO A57 is 3 GB RAM and comes with 32 GB storage, which can be further expanded to 128 GB using a microSD card. So be assured of making great photos and adequate storage with this beauty.

The phone runs on the in-house developed ColorOS 3.0 which is based on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Beneath the attractive metal unibody design lies a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 octa-core chipset clocking 1.4 GHz chipset. It comes paired with an Adreno 505 GPU. The phone is powered by a 2,900mAh battery.

The phone comes with a hybrid dual SIM that’s pretty much in demand, especially in India. With the country rapidly switching over to 4G, the OPPO A57 offers 4G with VoLTE.

Connectivity is a breeze with 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth v4.1 and also carries a GPS feature, 3.5 mm audio jack, USB and OTG support.  Fingerprint sensor is cleverly placed on the Home button itself.

So how does the Oppo A57 measure up to other similar phones in its category?

The OPPO A57 will be competing with Gionee S6, Moto M and the HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle.

The Gionee S6 runs on Media Tek 6753 octa-core processor, clocking 1.3 GHz, 5.5 inch full HD display with 2.5D Corning Gorilla curved glass, Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Amigo 3.2 OS,  3GB internal memory, 32 GB storage, 3,150mAh battery, 8-megapixel front camera and 13-megapixel rear camera with Sony IMX 258 sensor.

The Gionee S6 is available at around Rs 16,950, so it will be interesting to see how the OPPO A57 is finally priced. The A57 scores hands down over the S6 in the selfie space with a 13-megapixel front camera, but loses out to the S6 on the battery back-up front.

The Moto M sells for around Rs 16,000 and comes with a Media Tek Helio P15 octa-core processor that delivers a good 2.2 GHz speed. Like the Gionee S6, Moto M sports an 8-megapixel front camera but has a 16-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, similar to OPPO A57. So the OPPO scores over both Gionee S6 and Moto M in the selfie space, as it offers a 13-megapixel camera in the front.

With a 3,050mAh battery, the Moto M gives a superior back-up than the OPPO A57 but falls a little short of what the Gionee offers.

On processor speeds, Moto M gives superior performance over OPPO A57 and Gionee S6, which deliver 1.4 GHz and 1.3 GHz, respectively.

The HTC Desire 10 Lifestyle sells for around Rs 16,000 and houses a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor that delivers 1.6 GHz. Its Internal memory is on similar lines at 3 GB RAM and storage at 32 GB. The HTC Desire 10 comes with a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and a front camera with only 5-megapixels but a superior f/2.8 aperture.

The battery back-up is with 2,800mAh which is slightly less than that of OPPO A57 which gives 2,900mAh but is behind 3,050 of Moto M and 3,150 in the Gionee S6.

Conclusion

If you are looking to buy a smartphone that captures terrific selfies, then OPPO A57 is the obvious choice. If processing speed is a major criteria then you will be happier with the Moto M which also gives a decent battery back-up.

OPPO A57 continues in the OPPO tradition of positioning itself as a selfie champion. Now, only if the company can come out with an equally attractive pricing, then selfie lovers can truly start 2017 as a Happy New Year.
