The Indian automotive industry is one of the largest in the world, and has emerged as the 3rd largest in Asia behind Japan and South Korea. The automobile industry accounts for 7.1 per cent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP).

The industry has received a further boost with various auto makers making heavy investments in various segments in the past few months. The Government of India encourages foreign investment in the automobile sector, and allows 100 per cent FDI under the automatic route. As a result, the industry received FDI worth US$ 13.48 billion during the period April 2000 to June 2015, as per the statistics of Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

With the Make in India campaign of the government, the automobile industry has indeed accelerated in its revival and growth.

The upcoming cars of 2015-2016:

Hatchback

• Maruti Suzuki YRA (Baleno) Premium Hatchback: Expected to be launched by the end of 2015 or early 2016, Maruti Suzuki India is coming out with Baleno, a premium hatchback, which is sure to give competition to Hyundai i20, the new-generation Honda Jazz and the Volkswagen Polo. This hatchback will be available in 1.3-litreDDiS unit (diesel), 1.25-litre K-Series petrol and 1.4-litre K-Series petrol engine options. It is expected to be priced between Rs. 5.50 lakh – Rs. 9 lakh
• Renault Kwid: The Kwid is an 800 cc much-awaited hatchback. Expected to be launched during the festive season, it is a CMF-A, a modular architecture concept jointly developed by Renault and Nissan. The car has an 800cc, 3-litre petrol engine, and is expected to give competition to Maruti Alto 800 and Hyundai Eon. The launch of Kwid will be in October-November 2015 and the price will be between Rs 3 to Rs 4 lakh.
• Tata Kite: Tata is planning on introducing a small hatchback called the Kite sometime in the second half of 2015. A replica of Indica eV2, the Kite will have a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a downsized version of 1.4 litre DiCOR diesel engine, 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engines. Expected to be released in the festive season, this car will be priced between Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh.
• New Generation Ford Figo: Expected to make a debut by the end of September or early October, this hatchback will feature a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel powertrains, and share the same platform as the Aspire. The new Generation Ford Figo will have more advanced features to offer than the older version. The vehicle will range between Rs 4.2 lakh to 6.5 lakh.
• Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 Diesel: This vehicle is the diesel version of Maruti’s top-seller Alto 800. The launch is expected by the end of 2015, and it will be the country’s most affordable diesel car. Alto 800 diesel will feature the same 793cc, two-cylinder diesel unit that is good for 47bhp and 125Nm and promises very good mileage. The price is expected to be around Rs 4 lakh.
• Maruti Suzuki Ertiga Facelift: The updated model was recently unveiled at the Gaikondo Indonesia International Auto Show, and is expected to be launched in India during the festive season. This model has a new front fascia and other new features such as a triple-slat chrome grille with revised airdam, new radiator grille, new bumper and fog-lamp enclosures with chrome bezels. The new version has also been given 10-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels, revised bumper, re-designed tail-lamp cluster with new reflector elements, etc. The price range will be between Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 9 lakh.

Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs)

• Mahindra S101 Mini SUV: Ready to take on the Ford Eco Sport, this SUV by Mahindra & Mahindra will be built upon a new monocoque platform, with a 1.5-litre, three-cylinder engine. The vehicle is expected to be launched during the festive season and will be priced between Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh.
• Chevrolet Trailblazer: This SUV is designed on the General Motors’ Colorado pick-up truck’s ladder frame chassis. A fully-fledged SUV, the Chevrolet Trailblazer will give competition to Toyota Fortuner, Mitsubishi Pajero, Hyundai Santa Fe and the upcoming new-generation Ford Endeavour. The vehicle will have a 2.8-litre diesel engine that, mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, churns out a maximum power output of 180bhp and 470Nm of torque. The company might also launch the vehicle with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Expected to be launched in November 2015, the vehicle will be priced between Rs 22 lakh to Rs 28 lakh.
Sedans
• Tata Kite Sedan: Kite sedan will replace the Indigo eCS in the Indian market. Powered by 1.2-litre petrol all new engine, and a downsized version of 1.4 litre DiCOR diesel engine, 1.05-litre three-cylinder diesel engines, this vehicle will be launched in the second half of 2015. The price range will be Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh.
• Tata Manza CS: The all new Manza CS sedan will be a sub 4-metre sedan and will be positioned between the mid-size Manza and the Indigo eCS. The car will be available in both petrol and diesel – a 1.2-litre XETA petrol engine and a 1.3-litre Multi-jet diesel engine. Expected to be launched in September, 2015, the vehicle will be priced from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.
• BMW 3 –Series Facelift: The 3-Series facelift will retain the 3.0 litre 6-pot motor, but will undergo some major changes under the hood. It will also get a new 1.5 litre 3-pot petrol power-train that will have potential to churn maximum power of 134 bhp. Expected to be launched by the end of 2015, the 3- Series will range from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 48 lakh.
