It is difficult to accumulate talent and success at one place. Sometimes gifted people fail to achieve their goals. For getting success, curiosity and fire in the belly both are essential. Some taste success early while others must wait for a longer period. Taking the example of Rohit Sharma, the over talented batsman of team India is a well-known face in the world cricket. He is arguably one of the best batsmen in the ODI and T20I formats. Rohit punches above his weight in the shorter format of the game. Without respecting any bowler, he hits the ball at will and plays with ease, as if batting is the easiest thing to do in the world. Apparently, the king of white ball cricket failed several times in the red ball game. Cricket pundits judge a batsman’s quality from his traditional cricket records.

Fails to justify talent

Despite scoring heavily and playing several breath-taking innings for the country in ODIs and T20I, he never got the same level of respect like his fellow teammates Kohli or Pujara. He was never able justify his extraordinary talent in five days cricket format. Several times he faced harsh criticism for his lacklustre batting, faced the backlash of the selectors and eventually dropped from the team in Test cricket several times.

Rahul absence opens gate

The continuing poor form of KL Rahul opened the gates for Rohit to yet again win the confidence of selectors and get a do or die chance against the touring South African side. Some say playing Test cricket under immense pressure is just as big as climbing Mount Everest. The ongoing Test match at Vishakhpatnam was the acid test for Rohit to prove himself in the traditional cricketing format. After the initial hiccups, Mumbai batter grabbed this opportunity with both hands faced the dangerous Rabada and company with ease and played a gem of an innings.
Discussion ahead of Test

First-time opening in the red ball cricket, hot discussion was taking place among the cricket fans ahead of the first Test of the series in Vizag. Rohit has silenced his critics by scoring back to back hundreds. He has cemented his place in the team too.

Phenomenal ton

Rohit’s attacking knock of 176 runs and the mammoth 317 runs opening partnership with Mayank Aggarwal has put India on the driver’s seat. His innings was replete with patience, aggression, confidence and a surgeon’s like concentration.

Appetite of runs

The 32-year-old batsman’s appetite for runs increased after scoring a phenomenal 176 in the first innings. When India needed runs at a rapid pace, the swashbuckling batsman played like a champion and scored 127 runs in the second innings in quick time, provided ample time to the bowlers to dismiss the Proteas in their second innings and go one up in series. Remember this Test series is a part of the World Test Championship (WTC)

Rains of sixes

Vizag has now proved happy hunting ground for the hard-hitting batsman. He demolished the leather all over the ground. Rohit has been able to add several feathers to his hat. Overall, he hit 13 huge sixes in this test, breaking Navjot Singh Sidhu’s 8 sixes record made at Lucknow in 1994. The king of sixes becomes the first batsman in world cricket who holds the record of maximum number of sixes in two out of three formats of the game.

Record in all formats

Test: Rohit Sharma 13 v SA Vizag 2019/20

ODI: Rohit Sharma 16 v AUS Bengaluru 2013

T20I: Rohit Sharma 10 v SL Indore 2017

Surpasses Wessels

Opening for the first time in Test cricket, Rohit surpassed Kepler Wessels’ the former Australian-South African cricketer record by scoring highest runs while opening the innings for the first time in test cricket. Wessels had scored 208 runs in both the innings in the Ashes series in 1982-83. Rohit Sharma broke, more than three decades old record by scoring 303 runs in both the innings in Vizag Test.

Scripts history

India would like to wrap up this match quickly tomorrow and get maximum 40 points and remain on top in World Test Championship (WTC) points table. But to rule out the Proteas is a mistake, because cricket is a game where everything is possible till the last ball is not bowled. But Rohit Sharma has scripted a new history in the ongoing Test match.
