The admission process of one of the most reputed institutions of the country, i.e. the University of Delhi, is in full swing. Amidst this admission activity, a new buzz has been created regarding the fee hike. Yes, several colleges which are affiliated to the prestigious University of Delhi are contemplating increasing their fees, citing the reason of insufficient funding. Many colleges have even formed committees for the same. This issue is creating more anxiety as the admissions are just around the corner and students have been busy shortlisting the colleges. The main question which arises during this time is, which colleges are aiming at raising the fees and what will be the impact of this over students and their budget.

Colleges of Delhi University that are revising their fees
As per the reports published in the Hindustan Times, the staff council of Ramjas College has already pondered over the issue. They have decided to revise its annual infrastructure maintenance fees. The fee in 2018 was Rs. 1,500 which this year in 2019 will reach Rs. 3,500. Also, there will be a hike in the annual function and orientation fee which has been revised by an amount of Rs. 50, while the development fee has been increased by Rs. 500. The tuition fee of Ramjas college will be the same.
Bharati College of Delhi University had proposed changing the fee amount. However, the concerned governing body has declined to do so. The college has only managed to make a nominal charge of Rs. 300 in B.A (Honors) Psychology course. Also, the college is planning to get sponsorship to run the co-curricular activities within the college.
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College is also amongst the colleges that will be revising the fees. Though the final figures have not been revealed, the college has claimed that there will be minimal fees hike which will be concerned with managing the maintainance of the science laboratories.
St. Stephen’s College will also be increasing its annual fee by 6% and residential fee by 9%.
Sri Venkateshwara College will revise its annual fee by more than 10%. The college presently charges Rs. 12,000 for undergraduate courses but will now charge Rs. 14,000 for it.
Impact on students
College is an educational institution where a person gains unfathomable knowledge. But, in recent times, the sanctity of education is getting disturbed because of certain reasons, one of them being this hike in fees. Last year too, colleges like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College and Shyama Prasad Mukherjee College had raised their fees by Rs 4000. Dyal Singh College had effected an almost 50% hike across different courses.
Well, one can argue that the case of Delhi University is a bit different because being a government institution, the fees is quite less to begin with (as compared to the private ones). Despite this, the university has been able to maintain high degree of educational standards and made its name in the global arena.
On the other hand, in Delhi University, students are admitted from all over India; they belong to all classes and backgrounds. The living charges in Delhi are already quite high; there are fewer hostels available for students, so this fees hike may trouble the outstation students a little. However, the hike is not expected to be steep. So there is a possibility that it may not create more than minimal burden over students.
The University has still been pondering over fees hike for some time. What remains to be seen is how much hike in the fees is brought upon by the administration of the colleges.
