It is that time of the year again. CBSE has declared its Class XII results and students are on the threshold of college admissions. Hope, ambitions, and dreams are harnessed as cut-offs are checked, applications filed, and preparations for entrance exams commence. Let us take a look around Delhi University – one of the most coveted universities of the country and try to read the admissions scenario this year.
More Admission Seekers Knock DU Doors
DU threw open its online registrations for undergraduate courses on Monday, 22 May this year. Within the first three days, the university received some 58,000 registrations for admissions. The registrations are likely to continue till 12 June.
This year we expect a record number of applicants seeking entry into the UG courses of this university and others spread across the country. This is despite the fact that the Class XII pass percentage of CBSE registered a marginal drop vis-à-vis last year. This academic year some 82 percent students have cleared the exam in comparison to about 83.05 percent from last year. There has, however, been an increase in the number of students securing over 90 percent.
Raksha from Amity International School in Noida and Bhoomi from DAV School in Chandigarh secured the top two slots in CBSE XII this year scoring 99.6 percent and 99.4 percent marks respectively. Aditya Jain and Mannat Luthra from Bhavan Vidyalaya in Chandigarh jointly secured the third position with 99.2 percent marks.
Cut-Off Concerns
With most of the major examination boards declaring their results, the next major concern for students is DU cut-offs. Earlier on it looked likely that DU cut-offs this year would be lower than last year since the CBSE and other boards had decided to do away with the “mark spiking” policy. But it now seems likely that the cut-offs may remain the same as last year.
Science UG Admission Cut-offs: Some of the top colleges offering science UG courses affiliated with the DU include – St. Stephen’s College, Miranda House, Sri Venkateshwara College, Hansraj College, Hindu College, and Ramjas College. The cut-offs for B Sc. courses are likely to range between 96 and 98 percent.
Commerce UG Admission Cut-offs: Some of the most sought after and top colleges for Commerce undergraduate studies in the DU are – Shri Ram College of Commerce, Kirorimal College, Sri Venkateswara College, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, and Hansraj College. B. Com admission cut-offs are likely to range between 96 and 98 percent if not higher.
Arts UG Admission Cut-offs: Among the Arts colleges of DU the top ranks include – St. Stephen’s College, Lady Shri Ram College For Women, Miranda House, Sri Venkateshwara College, Hansraj College, Kamala Nehru College, Hindu College, And Jesus & Mary College. Here too the cut-offs are likely to hover between the 93 to 96 percent mark while BA in Economics may require higher marks.
The ‘unrealistically high’ cut-offs of Delhi University have come under fire in recent years, triggering a need for CBSE to rethink its evaluation process. The first cut-off list for DU is likely to be released on 20 June.
