Jeremy Lalrinnunga: Early Life, Career, Achievements And More

Jeremy Lalrinnunga of Mizoram won a gold medal in Commonwealth 2022. By doing so, he became India’s youngest weightlifter.

Who is Jeremy Lalrinnunga?

Lalrinnunga is a 19-year-old Indian weightlifter. Jeremy hails from the northeast state of Mizoram. Recently, he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022. By winning gold, Jeremy became India’s young weightlifter. He won gold in the 62 kg category by lifting 274 kg (124 kg in snatch and 150 kg in clean and jerk).

Family background of Jeremy 

Jeremy has four other siblings, and all his brothers are boxers. His mother is Lalmuanpuii, who prayed for his son’s victory. His father, Lalneihtluanga Ralte, was popular on the Mizoram boxing circuit. Lalneihtluanga has achieved the title of “National Junior Champion” and the senior level of “All-India YMCA Boxing Championship”.

Due to their early marriage, he lost his job. He had no choice but to work as a washer in power works department (PWD). Jeremy’s father wanted his son to be a boxer. On the other hand, Jeremy wanted to master weightlifting. His father motivated and assisted him in achieving the title of “India’s first Juvenile Olympian”.

The early life of Jeremy Lalrinnunga 

Jeremy Lalrinnunga was born on October 26, 2002. He does not have a sound background as he worked as a labourer on contract with the Power Works Department (PWD) to achieve his dream. He started his journey into weightlifting with bamboo and water pipes. However, Jeremy managed to gain admission to the popular institute “Army Institute of Sports”.

 Lalrinnunga’s weightlifting career

Jeremy began his journey into weightlifting at the age of 6. His first coach, Malsawma khiangte, motivated him to trials in 2011. He won a silver medal in the world youth championships. Again in 2017, Jeremy grabbed two silver medals at the World Championships. After training for another year, he won two silver medals at the Asian championships in 2018.

The same year, he became the first player to win a gold medal at the Youth Olympics. He even won the national championship in 2020. Vijay Sharma, RV Rahul’s trainer, has also trained gold medalist Jeremy Lalrinnunga. Trainer Sharma had to teach least to player Jeremy.

Achievements of Jeremy Lalrinnunga :

In 2016, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a silver medal at the Youth World Championships. A silver medal at the Asian Youth Championship.

In 2017 

He won a silver medal at the Youth World Championships and a gold medal at the Commonwealth junior championships. Again a gold medal in the Commonwealth youth championships.

In 2018

He grabbed a bronze medal in the Asian Junior Championships. A silver medal at the Asian Youth Championships and a gold medal in the Youth Olympic games.

In 2019 

He won a silver medal at the EGAT Cup International weightlifting championship and a gold medal at the Asian Youth Championship. Not only this but also a silver medal at the Asian Junior Championships. He then won a silver medal at the 6th Qatar International Cup.

In 2021

He won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Senior Championships. In 2022, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Due to his injury, he secured the gold medal by his side.
