Job Oriented Courses after B. Sc. (Science)

Youngsters are well aware of the fact that nowadays a mere graduation degree is not enough, especially when they come to know about the fiercely competitive job market. To gain a competitive edge, one should pursue additional courses: job-oriented diploma courses or any other professional course. For a science graduate, it seems that the scope is limited, as most are of the opinion that after passing 10+2 with Science, engineering or medical are the best for job prospects.

But, this is just a myth.

For those science students, who could not opt for engineering or medical out of their own interests or by circumstances, there is nothing to lose heart. Here are some of the most lucrative courses you can choose after graduation for better career:

Ever popular post-graduate course

Masters in Science (MSc): The obvious choice after graduation in science is of course to pursue Masters in Science (MSc) in the subject of specialisation pursued during graduation. The most common science subjects for graduation and post-graduation are physics, chemistry, maths, biology, botany, geology and zoology.

Masters in Agribusiness: Candidates with B.Sc. degree in Agriculture Sciences or similar subjects can opt for Masters in Agribusiness and they have career options as Farm Appraiser, Agricultural Policy Analyst, Farm Manager, Grain and livestock buyer, Market Analyst and Quality controller for firms.

Masters in Astrophysics: Science graduates can pursue Masters in Astrophysics, one of the most sought after subjects for students with a good understanding of physics and mathematics. There are few institutes which offer PG courses in Astrophysics such as Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Pune; Punjab University, Chandigarh; Pune University, Presidency University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, etc.

Other Upcoming Subjects in MSc

Many other new subjects have emerged that have better job prospects. These subjects such as Microbiology, Geo-informatics, Computer Science, Nautical Science, Horticulture, Electronics and Communications, IT, Electronics, Bioinformatics, Clinical Psychology, Biological and Life Sciences, are some of these subjects.

Eligibility: All general students with a score of above 55% at the end of 3-year graduation can apply for the M.Sc course. There are few colleges in which the students have to appear for entrance test as well to get admission.

Job Prospects: A student with a master’s degree is qualified for a range of positions in public, private and government institutions, private and government schools, market research firms, R&D firms, administrative agencies, consultancy companies and industry etc. An additional doctorate degree opens up job opportunities in academics in universities and colleges as lecturers and professors.

Masters in Business Administration (MBA)

Graduates in any subjects, whether science, arts or commerce, can pursue management courses provided they clear the entrance test, group discussion and interview. There is no dearth of jobs for them in the field of management, sales-marketing, finance, banking, administration, and business, if they pass out from some reputed institutes.

PG Courses and PhD Programs in Research-based Institutes

There are some prominent research-based institutes in the country where you can apply for postgraduate courses. Usually, it is better to do both undergraduate and postgraduate courses (BS+MS) in these institutes. But, you can also apply for 2-year PG program and integrated PhD programme.

Indian Institute of Social Science (IISC): IISC in Bangalore offers both undergraduate and post graduate courses. Postgraduate Courses in IISC include Master of Science in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Atomic and Optical Physics (Experimental), Condensed Matter Physics (Experiments and Theory), Astronomy and Astrophysics (Theoretical), Biocrystallography and Bio-informatics, High Energy Physics (Theoretical), etc.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER): These are a group of science education and research institutes, based in different locations in India. These institutes are considered to be the IITs of basic sciences. IISERs are presently based in Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, Tirupati, Thiruvananthapuram, and Berhampur.

Other Research Institutes: Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital; Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai; Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad; International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), Bangalore; Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam; Indian Institute of Astrophysics, (IIA) Bangalore; The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai; Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, etc.

Subjects of specialisation: Such institutes offer PG courses in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Atmospheric Physics, Astrophysical Relativity, Data Assimilation and Dynamical Systems, Statistical Physics and Turbulence, and String Theory and Quantum Gravity, Band structure studies, Physics of interfaces, Nano-materials, Theoretical physics and many more.

Eligibility: For IISC, the eligibility criteria is to qualify the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) conducted by the Indian Institute of Science and IITs on behalf of GOI for PG courses. Further, you can pursue Integrated PhD Science. For IISER and others, the eligibility criteria is to qualify the Joint Entrance Screening Test.
