Job-oriented Courses After Mechanical Engineering

Professional Courses After Mechanical Engineering

One of the oldest and popular disciplines of engineering is Mechanical Engineering. It encompasses a whole range of subjects like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Thermal Engineering, Designing, Power Plant Engineering, HVAC, Metrology and Quality Control, Production Engineering, Maintenance Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering. It finally opens up job prospects in design, production, manufacturing and maintenance.

It is entirely your choice to select the best field as per your interest and ability. After a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, students can opt for higher advanced courses or may start working immediately. Though jobs are available for mechanical engineering graduates in various sectors, pursuing an advanced course opens avenues for better employment opportunities.

We present below a list of popular job-oriented courses after mechanical engineering:

1. M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering

The ever-popular advanced course is an M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering. All major institutes such as the IITs, NITs, BITS and others offer M.Tech courses in Mechanical Engineering. This is a 2-year full time program to be taken after a B.Tech. For working engineering graduates, this is a 3-year part time regular program. Admission for M.Tech courses depends either on the bachelor’s degree in (B.E/B.Tech) or on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE ) score and an interview.

The subjects of specialisation in the M.Tech courses include Mechanical Engineering Design, Industrial and Production Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Automobile Engineering, etc.

Salary Expectation- Around 2 Lakh (Per annum)

2. Piping Design and Engineering Course

This is an excellent job-oriented course as it makes students industry-ready. It is one of the courses recommended by experts after one completes graduation in Mechanical Engineering. Not all engineering graduates are eligible to take up this course. Piping course has concepts of mechanical engineering included in it, which makes it relevant for a mechanical engineer to study this course as compared to other engineering backgrounds.

Courses offered by various institutes

  • M.Tech in Piping Design and Engineering
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Piping Design Engineering
  • Certificate Course in Piping Design & Drafting
  • Certificate Course Pipe Stress Analysis
  • Diploma in Piping Technology

While the M.Tech and PG Diploma courses are 2 year full-time courses, the certificate courses are short-term, ranging from 3 months to 1 year.

Salary Expectation- Between 6 to 14 Lakh (Per annum)

Job prospects

Pursuing Piping Engineering opens career opportunities in Chemical Industry, Merchant Navy, Petroleum Refinery sectors, Manufacturing firms, etc. All these sectors have great demand for Piping specialists.

3. Master of Engineering in Tool Design

It is a highly lucrative course for graduates in Mechanical Engineering. This can be 2-year full time courses or short-term diploma and certificate courses. The long-term courses offered by various institutes are

  • M.E. in CAD/CAM
  • M.E. in Tool Design
  • Post Graduate Course in Tool, Die & Mould Design
  • Post Diploma in Tool Design
  • Advanced Diploma in Tool & Die Making (ADTDM)
  • M. Tech (Mechatronics)

The subjects of specialisation are Auto CAD CNC Programming, Application of Hydraulics and Pneumatics in Tool Design, Unigraphics (CAD &CAM), CATIA (CAD), ANSYS (CAE), Material Specification and Heat Treatment, Concept of Reverse Engineering, Press Tools, Die Casting Dies, Plastic Moulds, etc.

It is better to complete this course from institutes recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The Central Institute of Tool Design, Hyderabad, is a premier institute offering tool designing courses.

Salary expectation- Between 5 to 8 Lakh (Per annum)

4. Robotics Course

Another suitable advanced study course for Mechanical Engineering graduates is Robotics. This is the scientific study of the design and manufacturing of robots and a sub-specialisation of mechanical engineering. This field of engineering is emerging tremendously, providing lots of career opportunities for the robotic engineers.

Courses Offered

  • Diploma in Robotics
  • Master of Engineering in Robotics Engineering
  • Master of Technology in Robotics
  • Master of Engineering in Advanced Robotics
  • Master of Engineering in Robotics & Automation Engineering
  • Master of Technology in Mechatronics Engineering
  • Master of Engineering in Automation and Robotics
  • Master of Technology in Automation & Robotics
  • Master of Technology in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics

Some prominent universities offering these courses are the IITs, Jadavpur University (Kolkata), the University of Hyderabad, Thapar Institute of Engineering Technology, SRM University, (Kattamkulathur Chennai), etc.

Job Prospects

A robotic engineer has great job prospects in space research organisations, in industries which manufacture microchips, in the military, medical and automotive industries for making experimental robotics and so on.

Salary Expectation- Between 4 to 8 Lakh

5. Mechatronics Course

Another upcoming course for higher studies for mechanical engineers is Mechatronics, a study of science that is a combination of five disciplines: mechanics, informatics, electronics, automation and robotics.

Courses offered

  • Master of Engineering in Mechatronics Engineering
  • Master of Technology in Mechatronics Engineering

For Post Graduate programmes in mechatronics, a candidate needs to have B.E/B.Tech with specialisation in mechanical, electrical engineering, electronics, instrumentation, and telecommunication from any recognised university.

Some prominent industries offering these courses are VIT University (Vellore), Karpagam College of Engineering (Coimbatore), Rajalakshmi Engineering College (Thandalam, Chennai) and Madras Institute of Technology (Chennai)

Job prospects

After completing M.E / M.Tech in Mechatronics, job opportunities are primarily found in electronics industry, automobile, manufacturing, mining, transport, gas and oil, defence, robotics, aerospace and aviation, army, navy, air force, etc.

Salary Expectation- Between 3.6 to 10 Lakh
