If you’ve always dreamed of pursuing an engineering degree but think that financial hurdles may pull the brakes on your education, fret not. India is the land of opportunity; more specifically those who are meritorious are always accorded adequate opportunities. The following are various scholarships available for students pursuing BE, B.Tech, and higher studies in the field of Engineering –

INDIAN OIL CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Indian Oil offers scholarships for students pursuing full time courses (including engineering courses)

Eligibility – To be considered eligible for the IOC scholarships, students are required to have gained admission in the first year of full time engineering course in any recognized university. Gross family income of student must be below INR 1,00,000 per annum.

Scholarship Amount – INR 2000 per month. 100 students will be offered the scholarship each year.

MERIT CUM MEANS BASED SCHOLARSHIPS

Merit cum means based scholarships offered by the Ministry of Minority Affairs for students pursuing graduate studies (including engineering courses).

Eligibility – Students belonging to minority (religious) communities including Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis, Jains etc. may avail of these scholarships based on the candidate’s merit. Students must gain a seat in a college from a recognized university and gross family income must not exceed INR 250000 per annum.

Scholarship amount – INR 10,000 per year in addition to course fee

CENTRAL SECTOR SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME FOR COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

The Central Government, Ministry of Human Resources Development (Department of Higher Education), provides scholarship to graduate & postgraduate students

Eligibility – Student must have scored minimum 80% marks in Class XII (10+2 pattern)

Scholarship amount – 82000 scholarships are awarded each year. INR 1000 is paid to each student per month for 10 months each academic year

NTPC SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME

Scholarships are awarded by the NTPC for schedules caste/schedule tribe /physically challenged students.

Eligibility – Student must be pursuing full time engineering degree in any branch – electrical, mechanical, electronics, instrumentation, or in computer science.

Scholarship amount – INR 1500 per month, paid from the second year of the course.

KISHORE VAIGYANIK PROTSAHAN YOJANA FELLOWSHIP

The GOI, Department of Science and Technology, offers Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana Fellowships for students studying Science, Medicine, and Engineering.

Eligibility – BE/B.Tech/B.Arch  1st and 2nd years students with minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in X and XII Board exams may apply.

Scholarship Amount – Fellowship of INR 4000 to INR 7000 per month are awarded under the scheme.

UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The University Grants Commission (UGC) awards Junior Research Fellowships in Engineering and Technology students having completed Master’s Degree in Engineering with 55% marks from a recognized University. Over a fifth of the scholarships available are reserved for SC/ST candidates.

Scholarship Amount – Fellowship of INR. 14,000 per month for first two years of study and INR 15,000 per month for the remaining months.

VIT UNIVERSITY IGNITE SCHOLARSHIPS

Vellore Institute of Technology University (VIT) is one of the country’s top universities offering Engineering degree courses.

Eligibility – Students who have gained admission into VIT to pursue an Engineering course.

Scholarship Amount – 200 meritorious students will be offered the scholarship which will cover the tuition fee for the entire course (4 years).

INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIPS

The IITs are the top Engineering institutions in the country. They collectively offer over 25 scholarships for undergraduate students pursuing engineering courses. They additionally offer other scholarships and fellowships for higher studies.

Eligibility – Most of the scholarships and fellowships are based on the merit of the students who apply. JEE Rankings and family income play a determining role. The amounts offered also vary.

LARSEN & TOUBRO LTD SCHOLARSHIPS

Private sector construction giant, L&T Ltd offers scholarships to deserving engineering graduates desirous of pursuing M.Tech in Construction Technology & Management course at IIT Delhi and IIT Madras. Apart from the scholarship, students who successfully complete the course are often considered for job openings in the company.

Scholarship amount – A stipend of INR 9000 per month is offered to the 40 engineering students who pursue this 24 month course.

This list is not an exhaustive one and is merely meant to show deserving students the path. There are numerous other scholarships and funding options available with meritorious students who do not come from the financial background that allows them to pursue an engineering degree and even higher studies in engineering.

Going in for a student loan with leading public sector or private bank is also a great way of funding your own studies. In most cases when the loan amount is up to INR 4 lakhs parents are required to enter into a co-obligation to repay once the studies are over but no co-lateral is sought.
