Every year lakhs of aspirants take part in PCS Exam which is conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC). Provincial Civil Services, abbreviated as PCS, is the pathway which leads to an administrative career in the Uttar Pradesh Government. The successful candidates after undergoing training are placed in various districts, divisions, and sub-divisions in the state.

This year the pattern of the exam has undergone various changes which you can check below:

Application form, Exam Date, and Admit Card-

• The online application process starts on- 6th July 2018

 • and ends on – 6th August 2018

 • Admit card- 10th August to 12th August

 • UPPCS Written Examination Date- 19th August 2018

 • Result declaration- September 2018

Eligibility for appearing in the UPPCS Exam-

• The individual must be a citizen of India.

 • Candidate should have domicile of Uttar Pradesh.

 • Age- 21 years to 40 years.

 • Candidate must be at least graduate ( belonging to any stream background).

 • Upper age relaxation for reserved category candidates.

Important changes in the pattern of examination –

Application correction: From this year a window for correction will be provided.

Wrong answers: The major change in the preliminary examination this time is the change in marking scheme which is directly going to affect your merit list. Unlike earlier rules, the 1/3rd mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. (Earlier 1/4th mark was deducted)

Optional subjects: From this year there will be only one optional subject for mains examination. (Earlier there were two optional subjects).

Interview: From this year, the weight of the interview will be only 100 marks (which was earlier 200 marks)

New Post in PCS: The post of the PCS (Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services), Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), Range Forest Officer (RFO) is scheduled to be filled by the UPPCS examination process.

Exam Pattern –

The exam is conducted in three parts-

 • Prelims Examination

 • Mains Examination

 • Interview

Only those who clear the Prelims examination can appear for mains examination.
The prelims exam will have two papers and both are to be cleared for appearing in the mains examination.

The question paper is objective.

 • English: Comprehension, Active Voice and Passive Voice, Parts of Speech, Transformation of Sentences, Direct and Indirect Speech, Punctuation and Spellings, Words Meanings, Vocabulary & usage, Idioms and Phrases, Fill in the Blanks.

 • Hindi: Word and Sentence formation, Sandhi, Samas, Shabd roop, Sandhi and Samas, Kriya, Anekaarthi Shabd, Paryayvachi, Vilom, Muhavre, Tatsam, Tatbhav, eliminating errors in sentences.

 • Maths: Arithmetic, Number System, Average, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound interests, Work and Time, Speed, Time and Distance.

Algebra:- LCM and HCF, and Set Theory

Geometry:- Constructions and theorems regarding triangle, rectangle, square, trapezium and circles, their perimeter and area, Volume and surface area of a sphere, right circular cylinder, right circular Cone and Cube.

Statistics:- Collection of data, Classification of data, frequency, frequency distribution, tabulation, cumulative frequency. Representation of data – Bar diagram, Pie chart, histogram, frequency polygon, cumulative frequency curves (ogives), Measures of Central Tendency: Arithmetic mean, Median and Mode.

 OPTIONAL SUBJECT: Anyone optional subject could be chosen.

 Candidates can choose from the following –

Group A: Social Work, Anthropology, Sociology

 • Group B: Mathematics, Statistics

 • Group C: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Veterinary Science

 • Group D: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Agriculture Engineering

 • Group E: English Literature, Hindi Literature, Urdu Literature, Arabic Literature, Persian Literature, Sanskrit Literature

 • Group F: Political Science and International Relations, Public Administration

 • Group G: Management, Public Administration

ESSAY: There will be three sections and candidates will have to write an essay of 700 words on each topic.

 The topics will be based on:

 • Section A: Literature and Culture, Social sphere, Political sphere.

 • Section B: Science, Environment, and Technology, Economic Sphere, Agriculture, Industry, and Trade.

 • Section C: National and International Events, Natural Calamities, Land slide, Earthquake, Deluge, Drought etc, National Development programmes and projects.

General HINDI: Question-answer from Unseen passage, Abstraction, Government and Semi-government letter, telegram, official orders, notification, circular writing, Knowledge of words and uses, Uses of Prefix and Suffix, Antonyms, One-word substitution, Spelling and Sentence correction, Idioms and Phrases.

INTERVIEW:

 • The weight of the interview is 100 marks.

 • There is no specific pattern and syllabus of the interview.

 • Candidates should have good knowledge of the state, contemporary issues, and general knowledge. The candidate should be communicative and should express his views openly.
