MCD Election Results: Aam Admi Party’s Shelly Oberoi Becomes Delhi’s New Mayor

The AAP won 134 wards in the crucial Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections conducted in December 2022, overturning the BJP’s 15-year reign of the local body. In the 250-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 104 wards.

Mayoral Election Results

Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the mayoral election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). She received 150 votes in the poll, which took place at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House meeting, compared to Rekha Gupta of the BJP, who received 116 votes. According to the Indian Express, congratulating Oberoi on her win, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “people of Delhi won and hooliganism has been defeated.”

In her inaugural speech to the MCD Council, Oberoi congratulated Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, and the Lieutenant Governor and pledged to manage the MCD by the DMC Act’s guidelines. “We will all work together to fulfil the dreams of the people of Delhi,” she added.

Oberoi succeeded BJP member Satya Sharma as chairperson after the results were revealed. Additionally, Aaley Mohammad Iqbal of the Aam Aadmi Party was chosen as the Deputy Mayor after receiving 147 of the 266 total votes polled. There were two votes ruled invalid.

  • The 39-year-old councillor is also an Indian Business Association lifetime member (ICA).

Who is Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, the newly elected Delhi Deputy Mayor?

  • Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, the son of AAP Legislator Shoaib Iqbal, won Chandini Mahal Ward No. 76 by a remarkable margin of more than 17,000 votes. 
  • He previously served as a councillor in the year 2017 and the year 2012, and he represented the wards of Turkman Gate and Delhi Gate, respectively. In 2012, he also served as the North Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s city zone chairman.

Mayoral Election Timeline

On January 6, one month after the municipal corporation elections, the House met for the first time. Aam Aadmi Party and Bhartiya Janata Party supporters exchanged punches, and the meeting was postponed. Moreover, because of the uproar over the decision to allow aldermen to vote, the second and third sessions on January 24 and February 6 have also been adjourned without choosing a mayor.

Finally, Voting was completed on February 22, and the fourth effort to select a new mayor for Delhi was successful. Before the election, a commotion occurred due to a dispute between Aam Aadmi Party members and the Delhi Police officer on Vijender Gupta’s admission to the MCD House. Previously, Virendra Sachdeva, the regional president of the BJP, asserted that even if his party loses the election, the outcome of the mayoral race will be startling.
