Met Gala or Met Ball, officially known as Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraising event at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Costume Institute.

Established in 1948 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, Met Gala takes place every first Monday of May. At first, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief, Vogue, said: “Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala will be postponed to a later date.” She further added that the magazine would still be previewing the “extraordinary exhibition” in its May issue. However, later the entire show was entirely called off, considering the global health crisis.

This year’s theme was “About Time: Fashion and Duration” and is still set to open on October 29 and run through February 7, 2021, as the costume institute is planning to reopen around mid-August this year. However, other manoeuvres like tours and concerts stand cancelled through the end of the year.

Met Gala is one of the most awaited fashion events which is graced by the presence of fashioners around the globe. Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, philanthropist Natasha Poonawalla are some of the Indians to have walked on Met Gala’s red carpet.

Not only Met Gala, but other popular fashion festivals are also seeing a delay or cancellations altogether. The Cannes Film Festival which was scheduled for May 12 to 23, has been postponed. The organizers released an official statement on Twitter stating, “As soon as the development of the French and international health situation will allow us to assess the real possibility, we will make our decision known, in accordance with our ongoing consultation with the French government and Cannes’ City Hall as well as with the festival’s board members, film industry professionals and all the partners of the event.”

Other globally popular events such as Milan Men’s Fashion Week Spring 2021 has been postponed, and the new dates are starting from June 19-23 to September 22-28. Paris Fashion Week 2020 has been called off altogether.
