World Telecommunication Day is celebrated every year on May 17, globally. The role of Information and Communication Technology is immense in today’s life. The day was first celebrated on May 17, 1969. The World Telecommunication Day also marks the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on May 17, 1865, in Paris.

The day celebrates the advancement of telecommunication and aims to increase awareness of the use of digital gadgets such as the internet and other modern technologies especially in remote and rural areas where many people are still not aware how to handle the internet. Telecommunication is an essential tool to bridge the gap between societies and economies. In the present situation, life is incomplete without the internet. Everything has been connected through the internet.

Telecoms a boon in COVID-19

Currently, the entire world is observing the COVID-19 lockdown period, including India. Telecommunication is the lifeline for the people of all walks of life. It is the only telecom that has kept the economic engines on. Most of the office goers are working from home, which is a gift of telecommunication.

Online classes keep students busy

All the educational institutions are conducting online classes that have helped the students to continue their studies from home amid lockdown. People are socially connected with their near and dear ones due to the services of telecoms. Partially most sectors are functioning amid lockdown with the help of telecommunication.

Online training for cricketers

In the lockdown period, sportspersons are also busy in their training schedule. BCCI is monitoring players of the India cricket team daily with the help of an exclusive app in the lockdown phase. The app is replete with several functions like online training sessions, chat rooms, questionnaires, and many more to keep the players mentally alert and physically fit.

The year 2020 has provided a unique opportunity for the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to reflect upon the contribution made by the Information and communications technology (ICT) in the advancement of information society and present the ‘Connect 2030 Agenda for Global Telecommunication. The main focus of ICT is to encourage economies, environmental, and social sustainability.
