There are lot of commonalities between the Indian cuisine and the Middle Eastern cuisine. Both have a tradition of using herbs and spices and the dishes made in either of the region can be relished by the other. Falafel is one such dish made in the Middle East region which would go well for the Indian palate. Falafel is made with chick peas or chole along with herbs like coriander and parsley and spices like cumin and chilli powder. It can be served as starters or filledĀ in with vegetables in a pita bread. Either way it gives a great and inviting taste. All you need is (serves 4)

  • Chick peas (chole) – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1 cup
  • Garlic – 5 to 6 cloves
  • Parsley – 1/4 cup
  • Coriander leaves – 1/4 cup
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying

Falafel Recipe

Preparation time: 10 min.

Cooking time: 20 min.

  1. Soak the chole overnight.
  2. Drain the water and mix with onion, garlic, parsley, coriander leaves, cumin powder, red chili powder, salt and grind coarsely in a food processor.
  3. Make small lemon sized balls with the mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and deep fry the balls till golden brown and crisp from outside.
  5. Remove on a kitchen tissue to drain any excessive oil.
  6. Serve hot.
