How to Make Yummy Khaman Dhokla in Microwave Oven?

The festive season is here, and you must be looking for some quick and easy-to-make recipes to please your family. Try out the Khaman Dhokla, a famous traditional snack of the Gujarat state, which is by now popular in many parts of the country. This savory cake is good for diabetes patients also. Additionally, it is a low-calorie, healthy and protein-rich diet. You can have dhokla in breakfast or as evening snack, and it is just perfect for your kid’s lunchbox. Make this yummy dhokla in microwave and enjoy with your family. Though making dhokla does not take much time but you need to prepare dal before if you are using dal instead of chickpea flour.

Serves: 4

Ingredients needed  for making Khaman Dhokla

  • 2 cups Split Bengal gram (Channa Dal)
  • ½ tsp Soda Bicarbonate
  • 2 cups Water
  • ¼ tsp Asafoetida (hing)
  • 4 Green chillies
  • ½ piece Ginger
  • 5 tsp Oil
  • Salt to taste

For Tempering

  • ¼ tsp Mustard seeds
  • 8 Curry leaves

For Garnishing

  • ½ cup chopped coriander leaves
  • ½ cup Coconut (grated)

How to make Khaman Dhokla

  • Soak the dal in water overnight. In the morning, grind it a little coarse. Again keep it overnight.
  • The next morning the dal will be in a fermented form. To this add half of the oil, salt, asafoetida, ground green chillies, ginger and soda bicarbonate mixed with a small amount of water. Beat the mixture thoroughly.
  • Take the large microwave baking dish (2” deep) and oil it properly.
  • Spread the entire mixture in the tray (about 1” thick layer).
  • Now take another microwave dish having hot water in it. Keep the tray with mixture in the tray with water. Cover these.
  • Microwave on 600 W for 10-12 minutes.
  • Bring the trays out. Let the dhokla cool. Cut it into pieces of about 1 ½” thickness.
  • For garnishing, combine the remaining oil, curry leaves and mustard seeds. Microwave on high for 2-3 mins and pour over Dhokla. Garnish further with grated coconut and chopped coriander.
  • Serve cold or warm with tomato sauce or green chutney.

Tips

  •  To check if the dhokla is done, before removing it from microwave pierce a fork in the tray containing the dhokla. If the fork comes out dry, it means the dhokla is done; otherwise, it needs more cooking.
  • If you want to do away the time consumed by dal, then you can use Besan or chickpea flour. It is an instant way to make dhokla.
