Jal Jeera – The Indian Lemonade

Indian food is full of masalas and curries, so there has to be some balancing to avoid any ill effects. Luckily, we in India, have also been blessed with knowing digestive qualities of certain seeds like anardana, elaichi, jeera, saunf etc. These seeds can be had as such which is the norm in many households across India. However, if we are able to use the quality of these seeds along with some nice flavor, it is like an icing on the top. One such drink is jal jeera, made with cumin (jeera) and extremely helpful in digesting the rich Indian food. Jal jeera can even be used as an appetizer drink. It is also used as a cool and refreshing drink with added ice cubes in the hot summer months, specially in the northern part of India. Mint (pudina) and lemon (nimbu) are added to jal jeera to enhance the taste and make it more refreshing. It is easy to create this nice refreshing drink quickly in your own kitchen and enjoy it with your family. So here is the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Coriander leaves – 1 cup
  • Mint leaves – 1 cup
  • Ginger – 1-inch piece
  • Black salt – 4 tsp
  • Regular salt – 1 tsp
  • Roasted cumin powder – 2 tsp
  • Lemon juice – 4 tbsp
  • Amchoor powder – 3 tsp
  • Sugar – 1 tsp

How to make Jal Jeera

  • Grind coriander, mint and ginger to a smooth paste.
  • Take out in a large vessel.
  • Add 4 cups of water and all the other remaining ingredients.
  • Strain using a strainer and discard the pulp.
  • Chill in the refrigerator.
  • Add ice cubes before serving.
