Ganesh Chaturthi is a popular Hindu festival and is celebrated as the rebirth of Ganesha, the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with a lot of pomp and enthusiam all over India. People make clay idols of Ganesha and pray for prosperity and the festival culminates with the visarjan of this idol in a river, lake or sea. It is said that Ganesha loves the modaks which are offered to him on this festival. Traditionally, modaks were made with rice flour with generous fillings of gud and coconut. However, we can also make them with yet another Ganesha favourites, motichoor. Today I give you the recipe for Motichoor Modak and offer these as prasad to Lord Ganesha on the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chathurthi.

Ingredients needed for Motichoor Modak

Besan – 2 cups

Sugar – 1 cup

Water – 3 cups

Milk – 1/4 cup

Cardamom powder – 1 tsp

Pistachios slivers – 1 tsp

Orange colour

Red colour

Ghee for frying

How to make Motichoor Modak

Heat sugar with water to make sugar syrup with one thread consistency.

Add milk and orange colour to the sugar syrup and keep aside.

Add red colour in 1 tsp milk and keep aside.

Make flowing besan batter.

Heat ghee in a frying pan.

Use a perforated spoon to pour the batter in the pan to make small boondi. Fry for 2-3 minutes.

Drain the boondi and put in the syrup.

Add cardamom powder and mix.

Divide into equal portions and make into modaks.

Garnish with pistachio slivers and apply little red milk as tilak on each modak.

Cool the Motichoor Modaks and serve.
