Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who is also Education Minister of Delhi, on Tuesday, 18 July, 2017, announced a merit-cum-scholarship scheme for students getting admission in any of the State Universities of Delhi, including Ambedkar University, starting from the academic session 2017-18. The AAP Government has decided to waive off 100% fees for students who come from families belonging to the BPL ( Below Poverty Line), and 25-50% waiver for students coming from families whose annual is salary up to Rs 6 lakh. It indeed comes as a major relief to the needy students who have to forgo higher studies due to financial constraints. In fact, approximately 20,000 –25,000 students from poor and moderate means of income will benefit from this scheme. An AAP Government spokesperson said that the government has allocated a budget of Rs 10 crore for the academic year 2017-18 for the purpose. The following are the State Government Institutions which will extend this scheme for the needy students:
- GGS Indraprastha University
- Delhi Technological University
- Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology
- Ambedkar University
- Indira Gandhi Delhi Technological University for Women
- Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University
- Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) will also be included under the scheme when the institution becomes a state university.
The Scheme The waiver for the needy students will be extended according to the following rules:
- Students from family with the National Food Security card will be given a 100 percent fee waiver. S
- Students from families with income up to 2.5 lakh per annum will be given 50 percent fee waiver.
- Students from families with income above Rs 2.5 lakh and not exceeding Rs.6 lakh per annum will get a 25% fee waiver.
- The student has to score a minimum of 60% marks for availing the scheme.
- SC/ST will get a relaxation of 5%
- This scheme is at present applicable for undergraduate courses.
- The scholarship will be renewed every year if the student manages to remain meritorious throughout.
- An additional amount of Rs 5,000 will also be given to the eligible students for books and other material required for the course.
The Delhi Government is also in the process of helping nearly 4 lakh students of 1029 Delhi government school studying at present in Class X, XI and XII in the following ways so that they are able to score well enough to pursue higher studies. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia announced the following:
- One-on-one guidance from Educational and Vocational Guidance Counsellor (EVGC) in their respective schools.
- There will be 480 counsellors in EVGC bureau of DoE and each one will be trained to help the students.
- The students will undergo a psychometric career assessment test.
- The Delhi Government has launched India’s largest career counselling and guidance project which will be implemented by iDreamCareer.com (iDC) with support from the UN Development Programme (UNDP), India and Central Square Foundation.
- An online personalised career guidance dashboard will be available to the students. This dashboard will give the students access to information on 500 plus careers and 350 plus entrance exams.
- The portal will be available in English as well as Hindi languages.
- The EVGC counsellors will have access to the students’ reports through the online counsellor dashboard. This will help the counsellor access career information and chat with their mapped school student to guide them.
