India woke up to the sad news of the demise of versatile Indian personality, Kuldip Nayar, who succumbed to death at the age of 95 after a brief illness. Kuldip Nayar was a famous and multifaceted Indian personality known for his contributions to the field of journalism, human rights activism, literary world and also politics. Condolences to the family members are pouring in from all quarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Congress National General Secretary Ashok Gehlot among others paid tributes to Nayar.

Kuldip Nayar was a popular personality who performed incredible roles in various fields during his lifetime. He was a syndicated columnist, a pro Indian journalist, a human rights activist, an eminent writer, and a former High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, known for his long career as a left-wing political commentator. His name was also nominated for the member of the Rajya Sabha in 1997.
A hardcore journalist: Nayar was a popular intransigent journalist who successfully managed to influence the Indian masses through his writings. He gave a start to his journalist career as a press reporter in an Urdu daily. From there, he continued on to becoming the head of the news agency. He also served as an editor of the English newspaper, ‘The Statesman’. Nayar was associated with a variety of news agencies and media publications in India. He also worked as a correspondent of the The Times, London, for about twenty years. For his outspoken writings, he also went to jail during the Emergency along with the other journalists. While being a journalist, he worked for former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri and former Union Home Minister Govind Ballabh Pant as a press information officer.
An eminent columnist: Kuldip Nayar worked as a columnist for more than 80 newspaper publications in 14 languages. These publications included The Daily Star, The Deccan Herald, The News, The Express Tribune (Pakistan), The Sunday Guardian, Dawn (Pakistan), The Statesman, and Prabhasakshi. He also wrote a syndicated column “Between the Lines”, which was widely appreciated.
An prolific author: Kuldip Nayar was a prolific author who authored 15 books, including Beyond the Lines (his autobiography), Wall at Wagah, Distant Neighbours: A Tale of the Subcontinent, India after Nehru, The Judgement, India-Pakistan Relationship,The Martyr, Scoop and India House. He mostly wrote about the current issues and the historic persons which included Jawaharlal Nehru, Barry Manilow, and Daniel Smith.
