Prime Minister Narendra Modi has finally reached Paris to attend the COP21 Climate Change Summit 2015. Not only PM Modi, but world leaders from different countries will be attending this event. Let’s have a look at what this climate change summit is all about.
What is the Climate Change Summit?
The Climate Change Conferences are annual conferences which are held as a part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Such meetings are being held since 1995; the first being in Berlin. In the 1997 session, the countries began to negotiate the Kyoto Protocol, which is a legally binding obligation for the developed countries to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
What is the agenda of COP21 Climate Change Summit 2015?
The 2015 conference is the 21st session of the Conferences of the Parties. It will be held from 30 November to 11 December in Le Bourget in Paris, France. The objective of this conference is to achieve a binding and a universal agreement over climate change from all the countries.
PM Modi’s agenda behind attending the summit
Here are the highlights of Modi’s participation in the conference:
- The main agenda of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate by keeping global warming below 2°C.
- He will also be delivering a speech while taking India’s stand on the issue. In his speech, he will showcase India’s harmony with nature and environment and its commitment to mitigate the climate change, and also inaugurate the Indian pavilion that has come up on the same grounds.
- The Indian PM will also jointly launch the International Solar Alliance along with the President of France, Francois Hollande.
- He will be attending the ‘Mission Innovation’, hosted by the US President, Barack Obama.
- During his Singapore visit, Modi had said that India will not create any problems for the world to fight global warming. He added that although India needs large amount of energy for development, but it will make every possible effort to deal with the issue.
- In his ‘mann ki baat’ session, PM Modi spoke about the recent floods in Tamil Nadu state and said that the tragedy was caused due to increased global warming which is leading to climate change in the world.
- During the conference, it is expected that India will argue in favour of the developed countries bearing the larger burden than the developing nations as such nations have contributed more to pollution in the last 200 years.
- A 25-member delegation will be focusing on the Prime Minister’s call for “climate justice” and “common but differential responsibilities”.

As Narendra Modi has reached Paris and is meeting and greeting leaders of different nations, there are high expectations and hopes from him to bring a good name to the country. The conference may prove to be a large platform for him to make the world feel about India’s growing global importance and presence as the summit will see world leaders under one roof.
