Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare; Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (May 2019–Present): Narendra Singh Tomar

Date of Birth: Tomar was born on June 12, 1957.

Place of Birth: He was born at Morar in Gwalior, MP (Madhya Pradesh).

Parents: His mother is Sharda Devi Tomar and his father is Munshi Singh Tomar.

Spouse: He is married to Kiran Singh Tomar. They have a daughter and two sons.

Political Party: Tomar is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Education: Tomar is a graduate of the Jiwaji University.

Career: Tomar has pursued politics right from the beginning. In 1979-80, he was the president of the Students Union at Govt College, Morar. From 1991-96, he was president of the state BJP Youth Forum.

Political Milestones: One of the first major political milestones in the career of Tomar was when he became the Lok Sabha MP (Member of Parliament) from 2014 to 2019 from Gwalior. He succeeded Yashodhara Raje Scindia in this parliamentary constituency. In 2019, he changed his constituency to Morena and won from there as well. In this case, he replaced Anoop Mishra. Till date, he has served in a number of ministries for the Central Government. To illustrate, he was given additional charge of the Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation from July 18, 2017 to September 3, 2017, in place of M Venkaiah Naidu.

Prior to that, he served as the Union Minister of Labour and Employment from May 26, 2014 to November 9, 2014 replacing Sis Ram Ola. He was also the Union Minister of Steel from May 26, 2014 to July 5, 2014, where he replaced Beni Prasad Verma. From May 26, 2014 to July 5, 2016, he served as the Union Minister of Mines. He succeeded Dinsha Patel in this case. He returned to this post to succeed Piyush Goyal on September 3, 2017 and served till May 30, 2019. He was placed in additional charge of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs from November 13, 2018 to May 30, 2019, replacing Ananth Kumar.

He became the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare from May 30, 2019 replacing Chaudhary Birender Singh. From July 5, 2019 he has also taken over the reins of the Union Ministry of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj. In this case he replaced Radha Mohan Singh.
