How Robotic Surgery Can Bring About Changes in India

Robotic surgery in India

Robotic surgery in IndiaThe method by which surgery is performed by the help of small tools which are attached to a robotic arm is known as the robotic surgery. The robotic arms function and are controlled with the help of a computer by the surgeons. By this method the patients are not operated through large incisions as robotic surgery is one of the best ways for doing minimally invasive surgery.

The main objectives for using robots in medical science are for providing modern diagnostic facilities with a minimum invasive and maximum possible comfort for the patients. Also, the robotic surgery renders the capabilities and facilities for performing smaller and more specific as well as accurate intrusions.

The history of robotic surgery goes back to 1985 when a robot named THE PUMA 560 was utilized for placing a needle for a brain surgery using CT guidance. In 1987 the first laparoscopic surgery was done where robotics were used. Then, The PROBOT which was developed by Imperial College London was utilized for performing prostatic surgery in 1988. In 1992 The ROBODOC which was introduced by the Integrated Surgical Systems was used in hip replacement surgery.

Da Vinci Surgical Systems

The world’s most advanced and technically sound surgical robot called Da Vinci Surgical Systems was developed and was named ‘da Vinci” in part after the great artist Leonardo da Vinci as he invented the world’s first robot by using anatomical accuracy and three dimensional details for making his work lively. By the help of this surgical system, the surgeons are able to conduct the most delicate and complex operations through very small cuts. The small instruments which are mounted on three separate arms of da Vinci Si allow the surgeons maximum range of motion and accuracy. The fourth arm of the da Vinci Si which carries a magnified high definition 3D camera assists the surgeons during the whole procedure.

These instruments and the camera are controlled by the surgeons from a console which is located in the operating room. The surgeon operates all four arms of da Vinci at the same time by placing his fingers into the master controls. The surgeon looks through the stereoscopic high – definition monitor with a more detailed and better 3D view of the operation as if it places the surgeon inside the patient.

Not only for just prostate surgeries, robotic surgeries are also used for hysterectomies, joint replacements, removal of fibroids, open heart surgery, and kidney surgeries. For rendering organ biopsies robots are also used along with MRIs. The surgeons need not to be in the room, or even at the same location where the patient is as they control the robots through the computer and can see detailed images of the patients much better than provided by the human eye. By utilizing this advanced technology the doctors can carry on with their procedure for the distant patients without travelling by one of them. The surgery also facilitates the surgeons from getting fatigued and over strained as the time consuming operations can lead to hand fatigue and tremors even for the best surgeons while the robots are more steadier and smoother.

Fewer traumas and faster recovery

The robotic surgery enables the surgeons to have an unparallelled control in a minimally invasive environment as if the surgeons’ miniature body has gone inside the patient. As compared to open surgery the patients get a number of benefits from robotic surgery like fewer traumas on the body, faster recovery time, shorter hospital stay, less blood loss and fewer complications and the operations can now be carried out through small cuts.

All over the world the Indian doctors has earned maximum respect for their innovations, diagnostic capabilities and high end knowledge and they have brought a very high quality healthcare service to India. Though the Robotic Surgery is in an infancy stage in India but it is gaining its popularity, the reason being that internationally the Robotic Surgery has got its due acclamation because the present trend there is to have minimum incisions during operations which is very much possible by this process than conventional laparoscopic surgery. Globally it has become a much preferred procedure for the patients as the recovery time is very less and the requirement for blood is also very minimal.

Now more and more hospitals are adopting this advance technique and most of the top hospitals in India are conducting Robotic surgeries.

In India robotic technology will definitely grow in the near future though now it is very expensive and in the country like India where there is so much poverty it requires an economic backbone and solid financial assistance and infrastructure from the Government, the NGOs and big corporate houses and others. India should not ignore this innovative and advanced technological revolution as every person in India should get all types of medical facilities.
