Know about Dehydration and the best foods to beat it

What is dehydration?

Dehydration is a condition in which your body’s fluid levels run low. It usually occurs because of less water intake, eating salty foods or losing water through sweat more than the intake. Dehydration is a common problem during summers when our bodies lose more fluids than usual. Human bodies are 70% water, and it is essential for all bodily processes and good wellbeing. Our bodies start to feel dehydrated after losing 1 to 2% of body water. It can be moderate or severe, depending on the amount of fluid loss.

Symptoms of Dehydration

Dehydration, if left untreated, can be life-threatening. Here are some symptoms of dehydration:

Feeling thirsty

An obvious symptom of fluid loss is your body signalling you to drink fluids. Thirst is a reflex body function. It is the first sign of your body telling you you’re dehydrated.

Lack of energy

When your body feels dehydrated, your energy levels fall. This is due to disruption in your body’s natural processes and functioning.

Headaches

Loss of water creates migraines like headaches. This is due to the loss of water in your brain that leads to mild contractions causing pain.

Disillusionment or lightheadedness

The loss of fluids makes the blood thicker, increases toxins, disrupts the electrolyte balance and can even inhibit oxygen supply to the brain.

Summers

During summers, the temperatures run high. Our body needs more water to keep us calm and all the processes in check. Being out in the sun is a significant reason behind dehydration in summers. It is essential to look after your diet, especially during summers.
