Life is not the same for millions of people around the world any longer. The global pandemic brought on by COVID-19 is almost consuming the whole world with the fatality rate and culpability of transmission. In no time, however, the coronavirus outbreak has become a catastrophe, causing considerable socioeconomic suspensions around the globe.

As a measure, governments imposed nation-wide lockdowns for different periods determined by the gravity of the situation in different countries.

In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a nation-wide lockdown on March 24 to curb the spread of this deadly disease. Apart from a few essential services such as pharmacy and groceries, the entire country is shut. So, here is a snoop of everything that can or can’t be done when India is under lockdown.

 21-Day Nationwide Lockdown

Schools Across The Nation

Schools and colleges are now shifting to the online medium to meet the daily requirements of classes. This was necessitated after the government shut the schools in the wake of coronavirus pandemic. Union HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal said that students and teachers are of utmost importance to the government and his ministry is ensuring that there is no academic loss to students.

“It is difficult to take a decision at the moment. We will review the situation on April 14 and depending upon the circumstances; a decision will be taken on whether schools and colleges can be reopened now or have to be closed for more time.”

As of now, online classes are being conducted using various online platforms, building contingency plans. Government-run Kendriya Vidyalaya’s are also consulting experts. IIT Delhi will also compensate for the shortened last semester after the lockdown is lifted, IIM Ahmedabad is looking for more interactive technology solutions. It will take a call by May-end, amongst several other major institutes.

What About Eating Out?

In the on-going nation-wide lockdown, the restaurant industry is one of the worst-hit in the COVID-19 outbreak. All the eateries including cafes, dining space and bars have been closed since the first announcement of all-India Janata-curfew. But after e-commerce and food delivery became an essential service, online platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy are taking orders from customers.

So, during the 21-day lockdown, you might not be able to go out and dine, but you can still call in food. But take care to check on the hygiene level of the restaurant you order from.

Work From Home

Since all offices are closed due to the nation-wide lockdown, employees have been given work from home.

So, services that can be done via telecommunication or online are operating from home with their respective work from home policies. However, companies that can not function virtually must remain closed. Businesses that fall under essential services are adhering to the safe distancing measures.

Visiting Hospitals for Regular or Emergency Check-Ups

Hospitals are open round the clock in the country. However, OPD services remain closed. The Union Health Ministry urged patients to take advantage of the telemedicine services available at the majority of the hospitals across the country.

However, the mobility crisis has been addressed by the government of Karnataka. The Bengaluru based ride Ola has announced the launch of Ola Emergency for urgent medical trips to the hospitals.

Registered mental health practitioners have also started telephonic therapies as clinics remain closed.

Essential Groceries

Since this category falls under essential services, the grocery stores remain open in the country. However, as a precautionary measure, the stores are not allowing more than one person inside the store. The waiting queue outside is also requested to maintain one hand distance.

The government is also ensuring ration at subsidised rates or for free for the marginalised section of the society. In West Bengal, free ration of maximum five kilos is being given. Delhi’s Chief Minister has also announced that the government would provide ration to those who don’t hold a card to ensure that people can fight hunger during the lockdown. Except for pharmacy and grocery stores, all places are shut.

Recreational and Religious Places also Remains Shut

The prominent tourist spots and famous religious places are also shut in consideration of the on-going crisis in the country. Apart from that, all the cinema halls and malls have also been closed.

Are the Banks Open?

During the 21 days lockdown, the banking sector has been directed to remain open as part of essential services to ensure that people are not facing any problems in the financial aspect.

Moreover, ATMs are also functional; however, the usual server issues can occur from time to time.
