Many a time we make plans but we have to change them due to the arising circumstances such as health issues, family obligations etc. This becomes a major issue when a ticket has already been booked as tickets have to be re-booked or cancelled and later a refund has to be claimed. As the rules have been changed, it is going to be a daunting task to claim your refund on cancellation if you are unaware of the latest rules.

Below are the new rules and charges for claiming cancellation of tickets and refunds –

If confirmed ticket of the passenger is cancelled before 48 hours of the scheduled time of departure: If a person cancels the confirmed train ticket 48 hours before the scheduled time of departure of the train, the charges for cancellation are –

  • AC Ist Class or Executive class – INR 240
  • For AC Tier 2/ Ist Class – INR 200
  • For AC Tier 3/ AC Chair Car/ AC 3 Economy – INR 180
  • Sleeper Class – INR. 120
  • Second Class – INR 60

*The above train ticket cancellation charges are imposed on per passenger basis.

If the confirmed ticket of the passenger is cancelled within a period of 48 hours or up to 12 hours before the train is scheduled to depart: In the above-mentioned case the train ticket cancellation charges will be 25% of the fare subjected to the minimum flat rate.

If confirmed ticket is cancelled up to four hours and less than 12 hours before the train is scheduled to depart: In the above mentioned case, the train ticket cancellation charges will be 50% of the fare subjected to the minimum flat rate.

Confirmed E-ticket cancellation:
If TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) is filed: If TDR is filed before four hours of scheduled departure of the train refund can be obtained.
If TDR is not filed: If TDR is not filed online before four hours of the scheduled departure of the train, no refund is granted.

RAC E-tickets: In case of RAC E-tickets, refund can be claimed only by filing TDR upto thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. If TDR is not filed, no refund is permitted.

Family E-ticket cancellation: A TDR should be filed before 30 minutes of the scheduled departure of the train for cancelling more than one ticket. If the seats of some members are confirmed and others are still in waiting full refund can be claimed by filing the TDR.

Tatkal Tickets Cancellation: If the Tatkal tickets are confirmed and they have to be cancelled due to other circumstances then no refund is provided for the cancellation. In some other cases like Tatkal ticket is in waiting or train is delayed, some amount is deducted and rest of the amount is provided to the customer. If the train is running late by 3 hours one can claim a refund as per the policies of IRCTC.

If train is cancelled: If the train is cancelled due to any arising circumstance full refund is permissible to the traveler. Refund can be claimed both offline and online in such a case.
