If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”  – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

The former President of India, the “Missile Man of India”, leading scientist of India, author, professor, aerospace engineer are a few phrases used for the most inspiring personality of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. Dr. Abdul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931 at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He studied physics at the St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchirappalli, and aerospace engineering at the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai.

Dr. Kalam worked towards the defence programme and made India self sufficient in space technology. With the India’s nuclear weapon test in 1998, he became the national hero. Dr. Kalam is a leader in the true sense with a very inspiring and charismatic personality.

Dr. Kalam is also an author and writer of many books. In one of his very popular books India 2020, he has presented the steps for India to become a developed nation. He wants India to become a knowledge superpower. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has three visions for India – Freedom, Development and Self Stand.

Freedom – For almost a period of 3000 years, invaders from all across the world have invaded India, looted her wealth, moved our culture and tried to modify India as per their wish. But India has never invaded any country because India respects and believes in the freedom of others. So, freedom is the first vision as respect comes with freedom.

Development – Since Independence, we have been a developing nation and still are one. But it is the time to change from a developing nation to a developed one. Our economy is going stronger, and our achievements are being recognized at global level, yet we do not have self confidence to call ourselves a developed nation. His second vision is the development of India.

Self-Stand – Other nations will respect us only if we will take a self stand. Both military as well as economic powers should go hand-in-hand to achieve this.

Role of Media – The media must acknowledge our strengths and strong personalities instead of just showing what is wrong and negative. The media never shows that India stands first in the production of milk and remote-sensing satellites. India is the second largest producer of wheat and rice. Apart from these, there are more than millions of achievements that must be focused by media instead of just adversities, disappointments and bad news.

What should we do? – Every time we keep complaining and blaming others for everything. We say our government is inefficient. We say there is no law and order in our country. We say municipality does not perform its duty in picking up the garbage at right time. We just say but do not act. On the other hand, we break the law, we throw garbage on roads and we ignore our duties. But we must wake up and perform our duties.

At present, Indians are obsessed with foreign-made products. Expect respect only if you have self-respect. Go for the products made in India. Self-realization is very important for India.

We must work towards getting more and more knowledge. Creativity, courage and righteousness are the three components of knowledge that result in enlightened citizens. Creative thinking will lead to knowledge and knowledge will make you great. Righteousness will give you direction and character. Courage will help you to think differently and then you will work hard to achieve success in life.

Teachers must be visionaries and inspiring as it is their responsibility to transform a child into a leader. Education should be imparted in a way that it brings out the best in kids. Everyone should have a mission in life. Education must give confidence to the students along with imparting knowledge.

Creativity and innovation has always been emphasized by Dr. Kalam. According to him, India needs creative leaders who can guide rather than command. India needs leaders with a vision and ability to convert that vision into action. A leader must have courage to handle success as well as failure.

Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has a vision of transforming India into a developed nation. Our India will then have a prospering and peaceful society with a developed economy. If you want to be a part of this mission, then you will have to fulfill your individual duties and responsibilities of keeping and making the society.
