He was the first Interim Prime Minister of India. Gulzarilal Nanda was the first Interim Prime Minister of India. He served twice, first as an interim PM in 1964 after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, and in 1966 when Lal Bahadur Shastri passed away. He is also the recipient of India’s highest civilian honor Bharat Ratna (1997).
