Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 69 on Tuesday, September 17. He spent his birthday in his home state of Gujarat and visited the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district.

Amit Shah’s Hindi push fails to entice pan India

BJP’s tallest leader of South India and Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday rebuffed Amit Shah’s push to make Hindi a common language across the country. Race against time to save Vikram

Vikram lander of Chandrayaan 2 is running out of life on the south pole region of the Moon. The lander lost contact with ISRO’s control centre after hard-landing on September 7. Congress & NCP agree on seat-sharing formula

Govt bans e-cigarettes

The Union Government on Wednesday approved a ban on e-cigarettes. Henceforth, production, import, export and sale of e-cigarettes would be a punishable offence with jail term from one to three years and fines of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakhs.

President appoints 4 new SC judges

President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of four Supreme Court (SC) judges upon their approval from the highest echelons of the government. The SC will now have full strength of 34 judges when these four judges take oath on Monday, September 23.

Odd-even violation may cost 20K

After the new Motor Vehicles Act amendments, the odd-even traffic scheme to be launched by Delhi government to combat pollution may further stir things up for Delhiites. Needless to say, they will have to be more careful while driving on capital roads. Violation of odd-even number may cost them a steep Rs 20,000. In the earlier avatar of the scheme, violators had to pay Rs. 2,000 only, a fraction of the current penalty.

Rajnath Singh first defence minister to fly in Tejas

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday created a record and became the first defence minister of the country to fly in Tejas, the indigenously built light combat aircraft (LCA). The minister said the flight was ‘smooth and comfortable’. The minister took off in Tejas from the HAL airport in Bengaluru.

Mamata meets Modi, says talks fruitful

MSME loans not to be declared NPAs: Finmin

State-owned banks will not declare stressed loan of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as a non-performing asset (NPA) till March 31, 2020. This was urged by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday.

NRC to be introduced all over India: Shah

Home Minister Amit Shah has confirmed on Wednesday that NRC will take place all across the country. The NRC register of Assam that was published on August 31 is still mired in controversy, with many political parties and agencies demanding a corrective exercise. Students’ union rejects JNU circular to carry ID card

The circular was issued on September 19, but the students’ union is not ready accept this proposal, and rather criticised it.

Vijayanagara to be 31st district of Karnataka

The State of Karnataka has added one more district which would be the 31st district in the state. The name of the new district is Vijayanagara, named after the historic Vijayanagara empire.

BMTC bans loud music on its buses

State transport authorities of Karnataka on Thursday decided to ban loud music in its buses. Playing loud music by passengers on their mobile or iPods is also banned. If caught, strict action will be taken against the culprit.

TN govt offers skill training for marginalized group

The Tamil Nadu (TN) government has decided to offer skill training to 50,000 candidates belonging to marginalized categories, including women, to uplift their standard of living. The State government has recently sanctioned Rs 100 crore for this purpose.

Major fire at Haldia Petrochemical injures 15, several critical

A major fire broke out at West Bengal-based Haldia Petrochemical’s naphtha cracker unit on Friday, September 20. Several fire brigades were pressed on duty to douse the fire. At least 15 people were injured, of whom six are critical. Many ambulances were rushed to the spot and the injured were taken to the hospital. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has been monitoring the entire situation.

Govt slashes corporate tax rates

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday, September 20, has decided to slash income tax rate for corporates. The government has reduced corporate tax rate to 22% from 30%, while new manufacturing companies will get the benefit of 15% tax from October 1, if they start manufacturing by 2023.

AP govt rewards Maharashtra ATS

The Andhra Pradesh (AP) government has announced a reward of Rs. 8 lakhs for the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team. This is in recognition for the arrest of seven Maoists last year, an official said on Wednesday.

Death toll reaches 34 in Andhra boat tragedy

Six more bodies were recovered on Wednesday resulting from the boat tragedy in the river Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. The death toll has now reached 34 and 13 people are still missing.

A government notification has confirmed the acceptance of the resignation of Madras High Court Chief Justice V K Tahilramani. She had resigned amid transfer row to Meghalaya High court. The Supreme Court rejected her request for reconsideration of her transfer. Meanwhile justice Vineet Kothari has been appointed as the acting chief justice of Madras High court.

Amit Panghal on the verge to create history

Amit Panghal is the first Indian boxer to reach in the World Championships final. Mass protest over Babul Supriyo’s presence in Jadavpur University

Babul Supriyo, the Union Minister for environment, forest and climate change on Thursday went to Jadavpur University to address a seminar organised by the ABVP, the student faction of RSS in the campus auditorium. His presence witnessed mass protest by university’s students. They raised slogans against him ‘Babul Supriyo Go Back’ and black flags were also shown to the minister.
