On May 22, Narendra Modi said that Kandla Port at Gujarat will be linked to Chabahar Port in Iran. Incidentally, said port is being developed with the assistance of India. It is expected that as and when accomplished this connection will provide a major boost to the international trade of India. He has also suggested that Kandla Port Trust (KPT), which happens to be the one that handles the maximum amount of cargo in the country, be renamed as Deendayal Port Trust as part of the centenary celebrations of Pundit Deendayal Upadhyay. Upadhyay was one of the leading ideologues of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangha (RSS). At the function the Prime Minister of India also laid the foundation stone for the development of fresh facilities at Kandla.

Facing the competition

As per Modi competition is getting more intense with every passing day and as such a port needs to be fitted with the latest and best facilities in order for it to do well and ensure its place in the domain of global trade. He also stated that Kandla has managed to become one of the top ports in Asia in a rather-short span of time. It also needs to be noted in this particular context that Kandla has been for more than 20 years the biggest cargo handling port in India.

Pumping in the money

Modi has started projects worth INR 993-996 crore for developing the facilities at Kandla. He is also hopeful that apart from improving India’s international trade the connection between this Kutch-based port and Chabahar in Iran would significantly aid in bringing about a new age of development. He has said that Kandla will be taking care of both liquid and dry cargo. He also feels that this will help economic cooperation in the region. This entire scheme is included in the Sagarmala Project being run by the central government. It is expected that this development of Kandla would aid in cheaper transport of goods as well.

Projects in the pipeline

In all six projects are to be carried out in order to develop Kandla Port even further. Modi expects that with the connection between Kandla and Chabahar the earlier will be able to set up a permanent place for itself in the trade map of the world. Among all the projects being talked about over here there is also a convention centre that is supposed to be named after Bhimrao Ambedkar.

Visiting Gujarat

Incidentally the latest visit was the third time in 2017 that Modi was visiting his home state where he has served consecutive terms as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Gujarat is also expected to organize its assembly election this year. In fact, BJP has been in power in the state for more than 20 years now. During this meeting Modi also attended the annual general meeting (AGM) of African Development Bank (AfDB). Incidentally, the keynote address for AfDB’s AGM was delivered by Arun Jaitley, the Union Finance Minister of India. In fact, Modi himself held several general meetings at Kutch.
