About Movie

Loosely adapted from the 2010 Korean movie ‘The Man From Nowhere’, Rocky Handsome is a dark crime drama with coarse action sequences. Playing the lead role of Rocky Handsome, John Abraham dominates the film all the way. It is about the transition of a government special agent Kabir Ahlawat to Rocky Handsome and then to a pawn shop owner in Goa. Abraham’s punches serve more than his dialogues, which are few and far between.

Plot

The movie is set in Goa where drug mafias, child trafficking, organ trading and other such brutal crimes are the order of the day. Lead character Rocky Handsome has a disturbing past — which should explain his terse demeanour but not stony acting. Short flashbacks and love songs reveal that he was a government special agent once upon a time, had a wife and is grim now because she isn’t around anymore though we don’t know why. Handsome now leads a sedentary life as a pawn shop attendant in Goa. His neighbour, an eight year old girl Naomi (played by Diya Chalwad), is always poking her nose in his business with innocent questions and explanations. It is established later that she has a heroin-addict single-mother, Anna (Nathalia Kaur), who couldn’t care less. Things get lurid when her delinquent mother tries to make off with druglord Kevin’s (Nishikant Kamat) stash, who in turn, is set to take over the illegal organ trading market. Rocky sets out to seek revenge against this badman after his men take away Naomi with whom he has now begun to share a special paternal bond.

Performances

John Abaraham’s acting is stony as usual. Shruti Hassan’s role as Rocky Handsome’s wife is small and the onscreen chemistry seems to be missing. Divya Chalwad, who plays the young Naomi, is adorable and spontaneous. Nishikant Kamat’s acting debut in the role of the drug peddler is fair but hardly intimidating.

Music

Rocky Handsome has a good mix of soulful songs and party numbers. You’ll like Shreya Ghosal’s Rehnumma and Sunidhi Chauhan’s Titliyaan. While Raahat Fateh Ali Khan’s Aye Khuda has an average composition, Alfazon Ki Tarah by Ankit Tiwari is predictable. The hit number Rock Tha Party by Bombay Rockers continues to be popular.

What’s Good?

The positive side is the cinematography and well-choreographed action sequences.

What’s Bad?

The storyline is weak and lacks a theme. The plot is unnecessarily complex and has a number of loopholes which make the film look highly unrealistic. The characters portraying the dark underbelly of Goa look buffoonish.

Verdict

Except for good cinematography and fast-paced action sequences, this movie has hardly anything else going for it. Watch it only if you are fond of action films and/or John Abraham.
