Worry not, because we break it down for you with our pick of 10 best Bollywood comedy movies of all time. Here is the list…

PK (2014)

What is one way to question people’s religious dogmas and superstitions without offending them straight away? It is by making a satirical film with a flawless 152-minute long screenplay, where an alien sent down on earth, would ask about all the ridiculous common practices, out of curiosity. Besides bagging awards and enjoying a blockbuster success, the movie is downright impressive with its beautiful star cast, namely, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani besides Aamir khan.

3 Idiots (2009)

Rajkumar Hirani surely has a way with getting across a powerful message heavy with satire, in a humorous tone. This Raju Hirani directed film broke the record of the highest grossing film at the time by grossing ₹459.96 crores, worldwide. However, if these astronomically big stats don’t impress you, its story should. The plot involves a clever take on students and their parents’ mentality of ‘following the crowd’ – in this case, blindly choosing engineering as a career. The movie touched so many points ranging from a poor family’s expectations from its son to a guy studying engineering whose career interests lie somewhere else to the common Indian nuisance we hear all the time, and all this while being absolutely humorous. Aamir khan gave a total hats-off performance. The movie did run into controversy, however, regarding the originality of the script, nonetheless, it trod past all the hurdles and apparently ‘aal was well’ again for the movie’s business.

Dhamaal (2007)

Looking for a lightsome movie for a lazy Sunday afternoon? Pick Dhamaal and you might even alleviate your Monday woes. This Indra Kumar directed film presents you with drama sequences one after the other that you can’t help but roll on the floor. The humour packed movie is about 4 young friends (Ritesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Aashish Chaudhary and Javed Jaffrey) who would steal their landlady’s pizza, sell a blank painting for huge amounts and keep sneaking away from a police officer (Sanjay Dutt) while hunting for a treasure location. No matter how many times you watch it, playing for the second time never gets old. The movie received a great response at the box office and even spawned sequels.

Hungama (2003)

This Priyadarshan classic is loosely based on Charles Dicken’s play ‘The Strange Gentleman’. A village girl (Rimi Sen) comes to Mumbai in search of a job to pay off her family debts. She soon learns she needs to have a husband to get an accommodation. Comedy ensues when she takes a guy (Aftab Shivdasani) as a fake husband to get through. Rajpal Yadav, like his many others, has unfailingly notched up the comic level. Besides laughter, you’ll also get to see a soft romantic love blooming between the main star cast. A perfect film that totally should be on your comedy list!

Hera Pheri (2000)

Now you might have seen the damsel in distress act over million times but a cool hunk in distress? Yes, Akshay Kumar brings the character live in this classic by Priyadarshan with clever jokes and quipping. His character plays around with a rather serious and decent Shyam (Sunil Shetty) and a kind & hilarious garage owner (Paresh Rawal). The film turned even more interesting when they got a misdirected call from an underworld mafia. This comic relief is among those which you can play again and again and still never get bored of it.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983)

This cult classic is a satire on the dark side of politics, media and bureaucracy. Director Kundan Shah managed to keep the tone light while bringing up serious issues. The talented star cast of actors Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, Satish Kaushik and Neena Gupta brought justice to their roles with brilliant performances, which even got the director and the actor a few awards. The story gains momentum when a photograph captured by Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani turns out to be someone committing murder. This leads to serial twists and discovering various shenanigans. If you are an old soul and love a mix up of seriousness with humour, this movie is for you.

Gol Maal (1979)

This Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed masterpiece is in the golden books of Hindi cinema. Amol Palekar’s effortless performance meshes well with the striking screenplay and story. The young Palekar gets a job with a petty boss who thinks a man’s moustache and his character are closely interrelated. To keep his boss happy, Amol gets a fake one but the real fun starts when he had to invent his twin after getting caught without a stache by his boss. The funky jingle played throughout the film ‘Sab golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai’ wouldn’t let the smile fade from your face.

Bombay To Goa (1972)

Throw in some adventure in a comic riot and you get Bombay to Goa playing for you. This Amitabh Bachchan starrer is a story about a young girl who is on a run for her life after witnessing a murder. She boards a train where she meets Bachchan. A fun-filled ride begins with people from all over India belonging to different religions and faiths. What keeps the film going is its fun tone matched with Bachchan’s charisma and a thrilling ride.

Padosan (1968)

This drama filled comic venture is sure to keep you occupied on a rather dull day. Watch it for the brilliant performance of Sunil Dutt and Sairu Banu who light up the tongue in cheek humour scenes. Sunil tries to woo a rather short-tempered Banu who loves music. To impress her, he even gives lip-synched performances to her and even enacts his suicide. The cute funny scenes would make you gasp, shock and laugh at the most silly things. Keep the popcorn coming as the movie would take a bit more than 2.5 hours of your time, rightfully so.

Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958)

Beauty (read Madhubala) and a great comedy await you in this Satyen Bose directed classic. A group of women-hating brothers (Kishore Kumar, Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar) experience a change in their lifestyle after they fall in love. The story is engaging while pertaining to the standards of decent family entertainment.
