Neo-noir is a classic concept that hasn’t really been able to find its place in the Hindi Cinema despite a number of trials. Dark drama or crime thrillers have a thronging impact on the audience’s mind that not many are capable of handling. Perhaps this is the reason why the filmmakers haven’t explored this segment much. But thankfully, there is at least one director who has been trying and has also been quite successful in mastering this genre of film direction. After having impressed with his work in Ek Haseena Thi, Sriram Raghavan brings to us yet another raw crime thriller Badlapur!
Plot: Badlapur narrates the story of a regular man, Raghav, whose wife and son are unfortunately killed in a bank robbery. Blown by the trauma of this loss, Raghav spends a major part of his life tracking down the culprits for a revenge that eventually changes the whole situation.
Performances:Breaking away from the stereotypical assumptions about his image, Varun Dhawan gives a stupendous show of his acting potentials! From a chocolate boy to an intensely grieved man, this actor is every bit of a star in the making. Not even a single frame looks any less captivating than the other. Badlapur is Varun’s best performance so far!
Nawazuddin Siddiqui deserves a bow for this one! He is truly one of the greatest discoveries for the Indian cinema. Kudos to him for having changed the whole idea of a villain! This one is his yet another master stroke which will leave you in awe of this marvellous actor.
Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam and Radhika Apte have short roles in the film. Nonetheless, each one of them does a good job in adding strength to the film.
Music: The music album of Badlapur has been beautifully composed by the talented duo Sachin-Jigar. You cannot afford to miss this entire composition! Each and every song is absolutely enthralling and impressive enough to penetrate the soul. The whole album of Badlapur is worth listening to a thousand times!
What’s Good: The unconventionality of the film is something that immediately strikes a chord. The performances outshine the script and leave you absolutely spellbound. Sriram has kept the gore and violence minimal so as to make it digestible. But the wrenching effect it leaves you with speaks much about the director’s expertise. The music is outstanding and so is the screenplay.
What’s Bad: While the first half keeps your eyes glued on to the screen, the second half loses its pace and becomes stretchy. Despite a game changing climax, there is something that seems to missing in terms of a revenge story.
Badlapur isn’t the regular revenge drama that the Indian audience is used to watching. And this unconventionality is what musters all the points for the film. The twists and tangles keep up the interest levels, making you stick to your seats all through the film. Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui deliver heart wrenching performances to make it a worthy deal. So if you are a fan of dark humour and psychological thrillers, Badlapur is a treat to have!
Verdict: Watch Badlapur only if you can digest intense dramas and bloody revenge stories!
