About Drishyam
July has indeed been a month of hits and high grossing films, and Drishyam is no less. Based on an original story by Jeethu Joseph, this family drama with its gripping suspense will keep your eyes glued to the screen. Though the movie is a remake of a hit Malyalam film with the same name that was released in 2013 (loosely based on a novel “The Devotion of Suspect X” by Keigo Higashino), this week’s release is a promising watch.
Plot:
Drishyam is a story of a common man, Vijay Salgaonkar (Ajay Devgn) who lives with his wife (Shriya Saran) and two daughters in a remote village of Goa. A 4th grade dropout, he believes in a simple life, runs a cable business and is fond of watching movies. The story takes many turns when a teenage boy, who was the only son of Goa’s IG Meera Deshmukh (Tabu), goes missing and Vijay, along with his family, is suspected in the case. What happens next is what you got to experience in the movie because every scene has a strong element of suspense till the end.
Drishyam’s Music:
Vishal Bhardwaj has composed the music for the movie with lyrics written by Gulzar. While the song ‘Dum Ghutta Hai’ aptly expresses the apprehensiveness and fears of the characters, the song ‘Kya Pata’ sung by Arijit Singh has altogether a different yet beautiful feel. ‘Carbon Copy’ and ‘Kab Kahan Se’ are other two songs, with unique renditions.
Performance Review:
Those who have not watched the other regional adaptations of this story would surely find it gripping and very well executed. All the actors in the films have played their role with conviction and ingenuity.
Like it was highlighted in the trailer when Tabu says, “Woh chauthi fail zaroor hai, par bahut chalaak hai”, the role of Vijay Salgaonkar demanded an earthy persona, determination and prowess to consistently keep the suspense alive. Ajay Devgn’s performance is undoubtedly praise worthy.
Shriya Saran plays the role of Ajay Devgn’s wife. Initially she seemed to be a misfit for her, but as the story progresses, her performance as a fearful yet protective mother and wife looks fair. Ishita Dutta and Mrinal Jadhav as their daughters in the movie were decent in their respective roles.
Tabu as Meera Deshmukh yet again proved her stance and delivers a flawless performance after Haider. The intensity with which she pulls of her character as a tough cop, and an emotional mother in search for her lost son, is one of the reasons you could go for this movie.
Rajat Kapoor as Tabu’s husband, and Kamlesh Sawant as a corrupt police officer will also capture your attention.
What’s good:
The plot, it’s execution, finely narrated suspense, comeback of the twosome Ajay Devgn and Tabu and of course, the climax is what makes Drishyam an enjoyable watch!
What’s bad:
Initial fifteen-twenty minutes were patchy with loose ends. At some moments a few characters seemed to be too sketchy. Traces of forced humor were avoidable.
Verdict: It is absolutely a story-driven film and will leave you stunned. If suspense is your thing, go for this one!
