Raksha Bandhan Songs – Beautiful and iconic Bollywood songs that depict the beautiful bond shared by brothers and sisters.

Raksha Bandhan is a festival that celebrates the bond of love between siblings. Bollywood has since time immemorial included this aspect of the brother and sister bond in most of the storylines, where the silver screen protagonist depicts the love of a brother, and the extent that he will go in protecting her from the evils of the society as well as safeguarding her future. Invariably, this bond is depicted through a song sequence, and Bollywood has a wealth of evergreen numbers that speak of the love that a brother and a sister share.

Here are a few of the most famous Bollywood songs that speak of the subliminal bond of unconditional love between a brother and a sister.

Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka (Hare Krishna Hare Rama)

A song that invariably brings tears to the eyes, it is packed with emotions. Starring Dev Anand and Zeenat Amman as onscreen brother and sister, this song is from the movie Hare Rama Hare Krishna. The song has two versions; the happy version is played when Dev Anand and Zeenat Amman are children, while the sad version is played when Zeenat Amman is about to die onscreen.

‘Apun Bola Tu Meri Laila’? (Josh)

This song from the movie Josh may not be the stereotypical brother-sister song sequence speaking of promises to keep and love between the two siblings, but it surely does depict the camaraderie that a brother and sister share, with a sprinkling of bickering thrown in to make it all seem very real. Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starred as the siblings in this movie.

Meri Pyari Beheniya (Sacha Jhoota)

Raksha Bandhan is indeed a time for celebrations, some fun and frolic. This song from the movie Sach Jhoota starring Rajesh Khanna in the role of the brother is very upbeat and is sure to set the tune for some real fun during the festival.  Kumari Naaz plays the role of Rajesh Khanna’s sister in this movie.

Ab Ke Baras Bhej (Bandini)

The soulful voice of Asha Bhosle combined with Bimal Roy’s poignant portrayal of women jail inmates yearning for their brothers is indeed one of the most emotional songs that depicts the beautiful bond shared by a brother and a sister. The movie has Nutan starring as one of the inmates in the jail.

Bhaiya Mere Rakhi Ke Bandhan (Choti Behan)

This song from the movie Choti Behan is a peppy number where the sister reminds the brother of the promises to keep in the subliminal relationship. The entire movie revolves around the brother-sister relationship, played by Balraj Sahni in the role of the elder brother, and Nanda as the younger sister.

Hum Behno Ke Liye Mere Bhaiyya (Anjaana)

A sentimental song where sister (actor Nazima) is shown carrying out the ritual of doing ‘aarti’, applying vermilion on the forehead, offering sweets and tying Rakhi on her brother’s (actor Rajendra Kumar) wrist. Lyrics were by Anand Bakshi and music was composed by the hit duo Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Festivals are a time for some fun and frolic, and music will just help alleviate the celebrations a notch higher. So before the Raksha Bandhan festival arrives, make sure you have the right songs recorded and saved to be played while celebrating. Happy Raksha Bandhan!
