Movie Plot:
Helicopter Eela is the story of a mother-son duo and ups and downs of their relationship. Based on the Gujarati Play Beta Kaagdo written by Anand Gandhi, this movie is centered around the life of Eela who is a helicopter single mother. She has a 20-year-old son who is in college but remains irate frequently because Eela pays extra close attention to his life. She constantly reminds her son Vivian about the tiffin, complaints about his obsession with cell-phone and also not giving her enough time. She enters his room without a knock and also overhears his conversations over the phone.
The movie begins with the scene where Eela joins college and it’s her first day. Interestingly, she is in the same college and, in fact, the same class of her son. In the next scene, the movie takes you back to the 90s where Eela’s story is depicted. Later, Ela’s husband (Arun) who abandoned the mother-son duo midway in the past returns to their life after 10 – 15 years. He expects that the mother and son will accept him. But, Eela and Vivaan mutually decide that they don’t need him in their life.
Movie Review:
Helicopter Eela is the story of a mollycoddling mother who peeves into the life of her teenaged son. In the first half, Pradeep Sarkar has beautifully tried to convey the ups and downs in the life of mother and son and also the young couple of Eela and Arun with a stance. The movie moves slowly with no melodrama surrounding it. In the second half, there are confrontal scenes and over nuisance which make this movie a tad too repetitive. The narrative of the movie is extremely non-linear which leaves the viewer in confusion regarding various scenes. Several plot points remain untouched like for example there is no clue what was there in the diary which Arun leaves for Vivaan. There is no information about the old neighbor who sit at the door all day. Moreover, there are no in-depth details of the kind of bond the mother-son duo shares when Eela joins the music-theatre group.
Coming to the performances, this movie belongs to Kajol as she has tried really hard to portray the character of Eela in a positive light. Riddhi Sen has also delivered his best throughout the movie. The supporting cast which includes Tota Roy Chowdhury and Neha Dhupia have given fine performances.
Our verdict:
Helicopter Eela is quite confusing and leaves the audience bewildered because of its non-linear narrative and lose the plot. Give it a watch only if you are a staunch fan of Kajol.
