19 Years Of ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, Some Of The Life Lessons From The Film Which Are Relevant Even Today

Kal Ho Naa Ho, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Preity Zinta, is completing 19 years since its release on November 28, 2003 and still gives the feel.

Bollywood Movie Kal Ho Na Ho
Kal Ho Na Ho is a Bollywood movie directed by Nikkhil Advani.

The Bollywood film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho‘, released in the year 2003, completed 19 years today. Directed by Nikkhil Advani, from the story to the music, songs and every character of this film is beautiful. The film had comedy, drama, emotion, good music, a message, everything.

All the characters of this film carry a different story with them. Even today there is a special place for this film in my heart. Shah Rukh Khan’s death at the end of the story breaks my heart, but this was the specialty of this film, which told us that a hero can die too.

I personally like this film. A big reason for this is that every character appears free to take their own decision. A combination of every religion and community is visible in this.

It is important to live every moment because there may be no tomorrow

By the way, it is said that every moment should be lived and every wish should be fulfilled. But despite knowing everything, we hardly ever implement this and most of our plans depend on ‘tomorrow’ only.

This film explained beautifully that ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho‘. Aman’s character wants to live and wants to love, but his cancer snatches everything from him. It is not common for a hero to die in any Indian film. At least in that period, the audience was not used to it. The hero survives even after taking 100 bullets so the film has a happy ending. But in this film, Aman Mathur dies while battling cancer and the scene of his death also gave a touch of reality to the film.

The movie characters laugh as much as in the beginning and also give a chance to realize the story of each character.

Beautiful and realistic characters of women appeared in the film, whether it is the character of Naina’s mother Jennifer, who takes care of her entire family after her husband’s departure. She brings up a girl child (Gia) against her mother-in-law’s wish. The character of her mother-in-law Sushma Seth (Lajjo Kapoor) is flawed, she has flaws, but she is real. She loves and also imposes old thoughts. Are there no such women in our family? There are, We have seen them as our grandmothers.

Naina was shown as an independent girl in this film, but her life is not easy. She wants to help her family while battling her problems. The character of her friend Sweetu (Delnaaz Paul) and her sister Jaswinder (Lillete Dubey) were also worked out in the film.

Friendship of Aman and Rohit

The friendship and pairing of Aman Mathur i.e. Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit i.e. Saif Ali Khan in the film are also very appealing. The friendship of these two shows that two boys who love a girl can be good friends. Trust is visible in the friendship of Aman and Rohit. Rohit’s Kanta Bhen also starts considering these two as ‘gay’, which also tickles the audience a lot. But by the end of the film, the story of the friendship of these two has managed to make its place among the audience.

Talking about the character Naina

Preity Zinta, who plays Naina in the film, wants to remain single. She doesn’t want to get married. While her mother Jennifer Kapoor and grandmother decorate the dreams of Naina’s marriage.

Naina avoided marriage because of the disintegration of her family after her father’s suicide. Naina’s character says that a girl’s life is not limited to marriage only. You can get an idea of her character from this dialogue when her family says that “Shaadi nahi karogi, toh bachche kaise paida honge“. On that, Naina speaks fiercely, “bachche paida karne ke liye shaadi ki kya jarurat hai“.

At that time, this film brought the concept of single and independent women into the limelight.

Here are some of the life lessons I learned from ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho‘ which are relevant even today:

1. It is okay to let go

It is okay to let go
It is okay to let go

Naina, who is depressed with her situation at home and perpetually sad about the loss of her father, feels responsible for the world falling apart. She wears the burdens of her chaotic world up to her sleeves until Aman comes into the picture and makes her realise that it is okay to let go and let the matter slip away with this iconic dialogue “haso, jiyo, muskurao, kya pata kal ho naa ho!”

2. Love will find its way

Love will find its way
Love will find its way

In a world full of chaos and humdrum, we often feel lonely and hopeless. We lose ourselves falling into the trap of believing that loneliness will last forever. This psyche is very common among people of all ages. However, that’s not true. It takes just a little shift in perspective and life starts falling into place. Just like Naina; a little receptive and positive outlook made all the difference. And you never know, you might also find your Rohit along the way!

3. Find a spot to cry. Don’t bottle it all up!

Find a spot to cry. Don't bottle it all up!
Find a spot to cry. Don’t bottle it all up!

The film starts with Naina going to her hideout to shed a few tears whenever she remembers her father “… jab bhi papa ki yaad ati hain, yaha aa jati hu”. That’s her secret spot to break down whenever life comes fast at her. This is the same spot she runs to when she discovers Aman is lying to her and her heart is broken. So, find your comfort space and bring it all out and make sure to have a good cry. It’s okay to pour your heart out.

4. Fake it till you make it!

Fake it till you make it!
Fake it till you make it!

As much as it is important to embrace your sadness and pour your heart out, it is equally important to find opportunities to smile. Amidst so many complications in life, we often fail to recognize our blessings, which doesn’t mean we don’t have any. So, identify your blessings and say “1..2..3..eee”.

5. Accept the situation and move on

Accept the situation and move on
Accept the situation and move on

Whether you agree or not, life goes on. So, whatever the problems are, accept them and move on. Naina fell in love with Aman completely unaware of his condition. But when she was inundated with the information of Aman dying, she was shattered and broken… but then with a little time, she heals again and eventually gives love another chance.

Having said that, nothing comes easy, not even happiness. But, Kal Ho Naa Ho taught us how to embrace the conflicts of life and appreciate what we have in the most fulfilling way.

Dialogues of ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ film

When it comes to the dialogue of the film the best one is “Kaash“, just one word and Shah Rukh Khan melts our hearts. This is the magic of King Khan’s presence, a single word can bring tears to our eyes.
