The year 2017 had been a roller-coaster ride for the Bollywood films. While some script-less yet humorous movies such as Golmaal Again and Judwaa 2 became blockbusters at the box office, there were many other content-driven films such as Newton and Lipstick Under My Burkha that glorified Hindi cinema and fetched many accolades abroad. The irony of the situation was that the good inventive films failed to get the glare and the public attention that they truly deserved.

Let us discuss the list of Bollywood films of 2017, a few of which made a mark in the history of Indian cinema. The highest-profitable Bollywood films released in 2017, by worldwide box office gross revenue, are as follows.

1. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

Baahubali 2 was one of the most expected movies of the year 2017 which later became the highest grossing Indian film of all time, collecting more than ₹1,000 crore in all languages in just ten days. This movie was such a craze among its fans ever since its first part, “Baahubali: The Beginning” (2015) was concluded on an incomplete note “Why Katappa killed Baahubali?”. It was an apogee of the story that began with 2015’s film and was lauded for its visual effects and epic scale.

2.Jolly LLB 2

Jolly LLB 2, the second installment of Jolly LLB (2013), is a black comedy on the Indian courtroom drama which reflects an unfortunate but true situation of our country’s judicial process. The film made an overall domestic collection of Rs. 117 crores becoming Akshay Kumar’s eighth highest opener and second highest of the year following Raees.

3.Raees

Raees is a quintessential action crime thriller set in the 1980s, overloaded with the “paisa vasool” dialogues and “seeti bajao”‘ performances of the actors. The film made an overall domestic
collection of Rs. 137.51 crores becoming the highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2017.

4.Golmaal Again

A yet another sequal of the franchisee “Golmaal”, Golmaal Again is a supernatural comedy filled with hilarious dialogues and superb comedy sequences making you fall off your seats with laughter. Golmaal Again grossed Rs. 205.72 crores after four weeks of its release in Indian box office.

5.Secret Superstar

Aamir Khan starrer Secret Superstar is an Indian musical drama film which beautifully revolves around the life of an aspiring teenage girl who wishes to become a singer one day. The movie successfully portrays a collage of emotions, from making its audiences laugh as well as cry. It received critical acclaims for the exceptional performances of the actors in the film. In India , the film made an overall collection of Rs 90 crores and was declared a commercial hit at the Indian box office.

6.Tiger Zinda Hai

Tiger Zinda Hai is a blockbuster sequal to the 2012 hit Ek Tha Tiger based on true event of the seizure of Indian nurses by ISIL in 2014. The movie is one of the most expensive Bollywood films of all time and made a collection of Rs. 339.08 crores in India. It came on to become the second highest grossing film of 2017 after Baahubali 2.

7.Kaabil

The film stars Hrithik Roshan in the lead along with Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy in the supportive roles. The film is a love story of two blind people which later turns into a revenge drama. The film was directed by Sanjay Gupta and the bravura performance of Hrithik was appreciated by the critics. It made a total collection of Rs. 135.14 crores in India.

8. Mom

No one is as fearful as the mother when someone hurts or cause any damage to her child. Mom, the suspense thriller is the absolute portrayal of this saying. The stupendous performance of the late Sridevi received immense appreciation from the critics and viewers alike. This Bollywood film grabbed a total collection of Rs. 31 crores at the box office.

9.Lipstick Under My Burkha

Starring critically renowned actors such as Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, theatre actress Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, Lipstick Under My Burkha is a controversial film that helped in changing the mindsets of the people on feminism in the country. Highlighting the bold subject of women’s sexual fantasies and male chauvinism, the film came under the purview of the censor board and finally got released after a long struggle making a business of Rs. 14.85 crores and went on to become one of the best films of 2017.

10.Hindi Medium

The film, Hindi Medium, is a social drama which sheds light on the never-ending obsession of the country with the English language. Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar Zaman starrer the film is a mirror to the current situation of the education system of India. Hindi Medium is the 7th highest grossing movie of 2017 which made a total collection of 60.85 Crores.

11.Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya

Starring Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in the lead, this movie won many hearts with their peculiar yet simple love story, Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The film was praised by the critics and audiences alike. The film, which was released in March last year, earned Rs 116.68 crore at the box office.

12.Toilet-Ek Prem Katha

Toilet-Ek Prem Katha, a film which revolves around the social issue of open defecation in India, managed to earn Rs 83.45 crore at the box office within just five days of its release. The movie is an unconventional love story of Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar) and Keshav (Akshay Kumar) with toilet being the villain in their fairy tale.

13.Sachin-A Billion Dreams

Sachin-A Billion Dreams is a documentary film on Sachin Tendulkar, which depicts his journey as a cricketer and how he went on to become the God of Cricket. The film beautifully portrays the details of his personal life, and also a few unheard aspects of the remarkable cricketer. The film bagged a total of Rs. 50.25 crore at the box office.

14.Judwaa 2

Judwaa 2 is the remake of David Dhawan’s own 1990s Salman Khan-starrer movie Judwaa which was a raging hit at the box office. Starring his own son, Varun Dhawan in the lead, the movie managed to impress the audiences worldwide. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 75 crore and earned Rs 131 crore domestically.

15.Newton

The chirpy and comic dialogue delivery between Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi’s characters formed the highlight of the movie plot. However, Newton gave us space and time to imagine ourselves at ground zero. It is one of the finest political satires and abstains from taking any sides. It gives a comic take on the state versus the Maoists bloody battle.
