India is like a repository of talent where thousands of stars are waiting for their turn to bring glory to the nation. Unfortunately, only a few rise up to become the legends of the country. One such glory in India is an impeccable woman called MC Mary Kom, the five-time world boxing champion! In a country where the only sport worshiped by the people is Cricket, it is quite hard to pave way for other sports and sports persons who have earned tremendous respect for the country. However, the growing trend of biopics in Bollywood has opened the gates of recognition for these living legends whose life is no less than a history! After honoring the flying Sikh Mikha Singh in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, its time to praise the iconic boxing champion, Mary Kom.

Plot: Omung Kumar’s Mary Kom traces the journey of success of this stupendous women boxing champion. How a simple daughter of rice farmer rose up to become a world champion is what the film narrates!

Performances: Priyanka Chopra is one of the finest actresses Bollywood has ever seen. Her performances in Barfi and Fashion earned her much appreciation for her sincerity and grasp over acting. In spite of facing public apprehension for being chosen as Mary Kom, she has managed to shut everybody’s mouth with yet another exemplary performance in this biopic! She has done every bit of a thing to bring out the precision of her character. Her expressions, strength and energy will actually make you forget that she is not the real Mary Kom!

Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa are quite natural in their acting and give good support to the film.

Music: The music of Mary Kom has been composed by new comer called Shashi Suman. Unfortunately, the album is just an average composition. Even though Mary Kom is not just a regular Bollywood flick, it still needed to have a powerful music score to add to the soulful impact. The best one from the lot-“Dil ye ziddi hai

What’s Good: The high-octane performance by Priyanka Chopra is the strength of the film. It is only her magnanimous potential that glues you till the end. Her sincerity and dedication towards the role deserves much appreciation.

What’s Bad: In spite of being a biopic, the film seems more of a fictionalised account of Mary Kom’s life. The film absolutely lacks on a good direction and screenplay. Even the music and the background effects could not drive soulful connection with the film. Instead of throwing much light on her life events, the film focuses on her achievements. Unfortunately, the impressive journey that Mary Kom undertook in real life could not be portrayed that well on the screen.

Biopics are the best medium of narrating a phenomenal life story that should be told to the world. But if such stories are not brought out with utmost precision, they tend to lose their subject. Mary Kom falls prey to the same misfortune of faulty direction which fails to generate that emotional impact. The film, despite of the powerful presence of Priyanka Chopra, fails to achieve what it ought to! Nonetheless, biopics should be respected and appreciated and thus watching Mary Kom is something you must do! If not as a movie, then for the sake of honoring the meritorious woman whose life is really an inspiration for all!

Verdict: Mary Kom is an inspirational story that must be heard!
