Plot: Pari, which is a supernatural thriller starring Anushka Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee, is not like the usual Indian horror films in which you are going to hear a door creaking or see a crow sitting on a tree. This movie is following Ram Gopal Verma’s tradition but goes beyond it and has tried to explore further the doom and gloom. The film is named “Pari”, which means the angel but the first half of the movie explores the life of a girl who seems to suffer from schizophrenia. This movie is an attempt to blend romance into a subsequently dark and ghoulish plot. The morbidity quotient of the movie goes up in the second half. The director has tried to keep a command of the movie and has kept it away from melodrama although there is a touch of unnecessary elements in the movie.

Movie Review: The movie “Pari” is inaptly titled purposely. The word “Pari” means a fairytale while the movie is a horror flick of an “anti-fairy tale. It is a psychotic horror film, which thrills its viewers and provides them with goosebumps at certain points. Directed by a newcomer Prosit Roy, the movie has tried to maintain a balance between romance and morbidity. Anushka Sharma, the actress in the movie and also the producer, has played the role of an uncivilized girl “Rukhsana” who is pale-faced and scary. She has delivered scenes that appear to be shockingly real and are also able to send a chill down our spine for some moments. The screenplay of the movie is fine, exorcism factor is also appealing but still, there are some weak and disturbing moments in the movie that are unappealing and are unable to hold the attention of the viewer for a long time. The twist in the plot where a Bengali family runs their car into an old woman who is bruised, chained and disoriented seems to invite thrills but soon the intriguing factor begins to diminish as there is nothing to keep viewers interested despite the inordinate length of the film and disconnection between the two opposed strands in the story. Both Anushka and Parambrata are able to display fine rapport with the characters they portray but Anushka being vulnerable, vile and vicious in the movie has taken a lead.

Our Verdict: The movie “Pari”, which is a psychotic horror, has a lot of twists that are unpredictable and make this movie ahead of all other melodramatic horror films. The film does not suffer near-fatal flaws, rather this gore-filled horror film has tried to cast a spell upon its viewers but the purpose has failed as it is unable to appeal in a beefed-up manner. If you are in a mood to watch a horror film and enjoy some thrilling scenes then this movie can serve your purpose. It’s a one-time watch movie, which is jumbled and chaotic but still serves as an improved attempt to display horror in Bollywood movies.
