Oscar Award winners from India

Indian Cinema is more than what it looks like. This star-studded glamorous world is not just the producer of commercial films, it is more than that. It has created gems that are recognized worldwide for their sheer brilliance in production, acting, music, etc.  Many a time, they have been awarded for the excellent work that they have done in the film industry.

The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars have also recognized the artistic excellence of Indian cinema. From Mehboob Khan’s ‘Mother India’ in 1958 to Mira Nair’s ‘Water’ in 2006, there are only 5 Indian films have made it to the Oscars. The Film Federation of India shortlists a film every year as India’s official entry to the Oscar awards but till now none of the movies has gone on to stake their claims on the prestigious “golden lady”.

However, the story does not end here. Let us look back at Indian Oscar winners who have made the country proud by winning the coveted Oscar Award.

Bhanu Athaiya gave an authentic look to all the characters in the movie, including Ben Kingsley who portrayed Mahatma Gandhi in the biopic. She was the only Indian working as the rest of the crew came from England on the sets of Gandhi.
