A good film is the one which is so unapologetically real that you almost forget your surroundings for a few hours. Unfortunately, Bollywood has only a handful of directors who are capable of making such films. And Shoojit Sircar is one of them! Vicky Donor, Madras Café and now Piku, this man has an unimaginable talent waiting to be unfolded on the screens. A comedy-drama, Piku is a very sincere manifestation of an eccentric father-daughter relationship that has its own foibles.
Plot: It is the story of a 70-year old cranky widower who is taken care of by his daughter, Piku! The only problem that muddles this family is his interrupted flow of motion!
Performances: The way Deepika Padukone has evolved herself in such a short time is certainly commendable! With such big hits one after the other, she is having one hell of a ride in Bollywood. Her proficiency in getting into the skin of the character with such an ease has made her one of the finest actresses today. In Piku, she is as natural as one can possibly be.
Amitabh Bachchan has once again proved that there is no age limit for showcasing one’s talents. He delivers a mesmerising performance once again!
Irrfan Khan is a true gem of the Indian Cinema! You can’t help being flabbergasted by the kind of sincerity he puts in his work. His inch-perfect performance holds the film together and makes you love every bit of the frame.
Moushumi Chatterjee brings in good energy in the film with her quirky way of dealing with life.
Music: The music album of Piku is a compilation of some sweet tunes with meaningful lyrics. Anupam Roy, who debuts as a composer with this film, manages to move away from the usual techno style. The songs are soulful for those fond of soft music but may not be liked much by someone who likes lively numbers. To sum up, the music album of Piku is a passable composition!
What’s Good: For a film like this, counting on the good things is quite a difficult task as you don’t really know where to begin from. Piku almost seems like your own story. The sweet-bitter relationship between the father and the daughter is emotionally absorbing. Phenomenal performances by each and every actor augment the worth of the film. The screenplay is commendable and so are the dialogues. Elaborating an off-putting topic like constipation in such a sensible way can only be expected from a genius like Shoojit Sircar!
What’s Bad: That’s unlikely for a film like this. However, the music of the film could have been better.
One of the best productions in the year so far, Piku is an endearingly honest piece of work from the director. The film runs high on realism and simplicity, making you believe every single strand of the story. The honesty of this father-daughter relationship will make you laugh, smile and cry at the same time. Piku is a very special film and a mandatory watch!
Verdict: Watch the film to have the “best motion of your life”!
