Plot:

This Shaad Ali movie is a biopic of Sandeep Singh – captain of the national hockey team and recipient of Arjuna Award. This is quite a heroic tale shedding light on how he fights all the odds and make a comeback from a crippling paralysis from waist down which kept him in a wheelchair for a year.

Born in the small town of Shahabad, young Sandeep Singh (played by Diljit Dosanjh), nonetheless dreams big, so big that he wants to be a part of Indian hockey team. However, he has a stern coach who puts out his fire time and again and it’s not until his teenage years, he again reignites his passion. The keen part in inspiring him is played by another hockey player Harpreet (played by Taapsee Pannu), who Diljit also fall in love with.

Before the intermission, the movie has been kept purposefully light with small-town moments here and there and it’s only after the second half, things start to take a serious turn with Diljit’s immobility and struggle, turning the film into an emotional roller coaster.

Review:

Diljit proved himself in Udta Punjab, but in Soorma he’s taken it to another level with brilliantly capturing every nuance of the character. You can’t help but appreciate his understanding of the character of an ambitious sportsman who has been hit hard. Taapsee also has done justice to her role. The narrative of the movie is easy on the audience with a realistic touch to the scenes.

Verdict: The movie really scores since it’s a story told with heart and have enough moments to inspire you. So, go for it. You won’t regret.
