The makers of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior have launched the trailer on November 19, 2019, on social media featuring Ajay Devgn as the brave Maratha warrior Subedar Tanhaji Malusare, who was on the battleground of Sinhagad in 1670, alongside Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The trailer starts from the point of the scuffle between the Mughals and the Marathas, which in history is known as the ‘Maratha War of Independence’. The film is based on the Maratha’s capturing the Sinhagad fort (erstwhile Kondhana) which is situated 35 km southwest of Pune, focusing on Tanaji Malusare played by Ajay Devgn, who was sent to procure the state.

Another important character is of Mughal army chief, Uday Bhan, the antagonist played by Saif Ali Khan. After a role like Gossain in Laal Kaptaan, I think the character of Uday Bhan was written keeping Khan in mind. Though his character is a negative one, which reflects in his get-up and his heavily rimmed kohl eyes.

The duo of Khan and Devgn will be seen together again after Vishal Bhardwaj’s re-adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello, ‘Omkara’ in 2006 which was a major success.

Kajol is also seen in the film playing Savitribai Malusare with a mix of broken Hindi/Marathi dialect and a get up of a typical Maharashtrian.

In the trailer, one can witness slicing, dicing, an army full of rage, aggression, horses – basically all the elements to be a prototype of a period drama, which has become a fad in Bollywood now. Starting from Manikarnika in January to Kesari in March, Kalank in April, to Panipat which is scheduled to be released in December this year. All the films have something in common; the aesthetic appeal. For say, the recent trailer of Panipat featuring Arjun Kapoor has a strong resemblance with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Padmaavat’ – in terms of the setting, clothes, design etc.

Directed by Om Raut and produced by Ajay Devgn, Bhushan Kumar, and Krishan Kumar, Tanhaji is set to release on January 10, 2020. It sure looks promising because of the story, the talented cast, and the entire set-up of the film.
