• The sitting MLA Surinder Singh (known as Surinder Commando due to his heroic feat as an NSG Commando in the 2008 Mumbai attacks) has been denied ticket by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He won this seat twice on the AAP ticket but denied this time. In fact, all the candidates of the 2020 Delhi Assembly election across party line (be it AAP, BJP, or INC) are fresh faces. This has posed a peculiar problem for the Delhi Cantt residents. They hardly know their candidates. The voters also feel that all the parties have fielded “outsider” candidates.

• Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded a retired Air Force officer, Virender Singh Kadian. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Manish Singh, a candidate from the Purvanchal community by keeping the Purvanchali vote bank in mind. Manish has another important qualification and that is his closeness to Delhi BJP President. Manish is considered a close aide of Delhi BJP President Manoj Tiwari. Indian National Congress (INC) has chosen a long-time party loyalist while distributing tickets.

• The general feeling among the voters of this constituency is that the sitting MLA Surinder Singh hasn’t performed well in the last 5-years. They consider his work as a no-show performance. The residents of the colonies are most unhappy with the AAP MLA. This is mainly because of the lack of works in the colonies by Surinder Commando. However, the residents do agree that beautification of the roads has been done in some areas, especially places such as Gopinath Bazar.

• In Delhi Cantonment, the houses are given on a 90 years lease. The renewal system has become a hectic task for those whose leases have come to an end. It not only draws a heavy penalty but also needs to be renewed from the Western Command, which is the headquarter of all the Cantonment boards. This is one of the major localized issues that need a solution.

• Virender Singh Kadian of AAP may not be considered as a local. However, his office is located in Sadar Bazar. That makes him approachable and as good as a local candidate. By denying ticket to Surender Commando (whose performance can’t be considered as good) and at the same time offering it to a person having a military background, AAP may beat the anti-incumbency factor.

• In the case of the BJP candidate Manish Singh, mixed feelings have cropped up as he was given a ticket in place of a local candidate. Singh actually wanted to contest this Vidhan Sabha election from Karolbagh/Paharganj area. However, he was given a ticket from Delhi Cantt assembly constituency.

• Congress’ Sandeep Tanwar is a local candidate who lives in Nairana. He has been campaigning with full strength for long and is likely to give a tough challenge to both the AAP and BJP candidates.
