A total of 27 Women out of 210 Candidates in Delhi Assembly Elections! This is the statistics of women candidates in India’s capital.
In the hot political season of Delhi, the major parties jumping into the race have released their candidate list of the Delhi Assembly Election 2020. Among others, the three leading political parties, namely Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress’s catalogue is somewhat foreseeably disappointing.
Where Indian National Congress fielded candidates for 67 seats amongst which 9 are women, and Aam Aadmi Party announced 10 women candidates for 70 assembly constituencies. The BJP, on the other hand, has subjugated the list on the worst ratio of men women at 8 out of 67 seats.
Which means, out of 210 candidates from the top three leading parties, only 27 women candidates have been put up to stand in the election. So, out of the total 958 candidates accepted by the Election Commission, 75 are women and this entails to around 7.8% of women’s inclusion in the upcoming Delhi Assembly Elections 2020. And as the election is nearing, the question of women’s existence in politics becomes even more pertinent.
Is it the “Co-gender voting” which results into such polarity in the ratio? But as per a survey conducted by a leading news portal, no evidence of co-gender voting has been found in 2009 as well as 2014 elections, though the survey has been restricted to constituencies where only one majority party nominated a woman.
The fact is quite evident in one of the data by Lokniti – CSDS, ECI in 2009, where 14% of men voted for female candidates as well as 14% women voters voted for female candidates only. Even in 2014, where 15% of men voted for a female candidate, 16% of women voted for female candidates.
Though there are other factors which are taken into consideration, such as religion and caste but getting back to gender bias amongst the voters, there is not much to hold voters accountable for.
The majority of the reason behind the disparity remains with the political parties who restricts themselves to enhance women’s representations in the Legislatures and Parliament.
In their poll manifestos where they talk about women’s safety, education and working against female infanticides, the ambiguous nature of the same reflects on the number of nominations given to women.
To combat this imbalanced discrepancy, scholars suggest increasing the number of women who run for office, which can lead to intensifying the amount of candidature being offered to women. As of now, with the current number of women, the idea of even a 33% reservation in the Parliament remains a discourse far removed from reality.
