Impeachment is a procedure in which the head of the state of a country or government officials are accused of unlawful activities. If they fail to prove their innocence when tried by the law of the land in the House of justice, then they are ousted from the office and courts take legal actions against such leaders.

Democrats look upbeat

The talk of the impeachment of Donald Trump has been the hottest issue across the world. The world was following the impeachment updates and questions of whether he will remain president of the US have been debated across the globe now. The speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has made it clear that Trump’s countdown as the president of the US has begun.

Abuse of power

The US president has been impeached on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charge against Trump is that he has made contact with some foreign parties to interfere in the 2020 US presidential elections in a bid to get re-elected once again. When voices started getting stronger against Trump, then he did his best to smother it but failed in his mission. Apart from this, when an inquiry was set up to reach the bottom of the case. Trump categorically told his administrative officials to ignore the court’s statement.

Trump defames Biden

The inquiry had cleared the air and Trump himself acknowledged that he suppressed nearly $400m military aid to Ukraine to put pressure on Ukraine to go for an investigation against Trump’s political rival and Democratic presidential front runner Joe Biden to defame his status. Meanwhile, the allegation was also made against Biden’s son Hunter, who had been working for a Ukraine company when his father was the vice-president in the US during the presidentship of Barrack Obama. Trump has been trying his best to prove that Ukraine had interfered in the 2016 US presidential election rather than Russia.

3rd US president to face Senate

The next step is likely to begin in the Senate in January 2020. Donald Trump would be the third US president to face a Senate impeachment trial; the other two are Andrew Johson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1999. Meanwhile, Richard Nixon stepped down before an impeachment vote was made in the House. The critical point is that Johson was the only president before Trump to be impeached in his first term.

Republican dominates in Senate

Donald Trump’s impeachment is not a guarantee that he will be unseated from the Oval Office. The ball is now in the court of the US Senate, which would emerge as the saviour of Trump’s presidentship. Two-thirds senators will require to vote to remove Trump. It means 67 out of 100 senators will have to vote against Trump.

Impeachment is a common issue in the political circle all over the world.

Some of the top leaders of the world who were impeached in recent years are listed below:

Dilma Rousseff

Dilma Rousseff was the first female president of Brazil; she was ousted from the office on charges of manipulating the federal budget in August 2015. The Senate voted against her. Meanwhile, Rousseff and her supporters accused her political rivals that they had conducted a coup in the country in the name of impeachment.

Otto Perez

Otto Perez, the Guatemalan president, was unseated from the office on September 3, 2015. He was accused of orchestrating a scheme where entrepreneurs were encouraged to bribe government officials to clear their imports through customs at discounted tariffs. Then the protesters came on the streets against the president, and he was presented in the court in connection with customs fraud, racketeering and bribery.

Impeachment of the President of India

The process of impeachment of the President of India has also been mentioned in the Constitution of India. The president of India can also be removed from the office through impeachment if he violates the Constitution of India. The impeachment process may take place in either house – Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. If charges are made against the president, then the signature of at least one-quarter of the total members of that House must be made on the notice.

Donald Trump’s impeachment has made the word ‘impeachment’ one of the most popular vocabularies at this moment. As per the US constitution, a president can be ousted from the office on the charges of “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanours”. Trump’s fate will only be decided in next January 2020.
