4 Steps to Prevent Hacking of Your Gmail Account

Securing Gmail accounts

Securing Gmail accountsIf you are in love with Google, then fasten your seat belts because then it is not only about your Gmail account. It is about so much more. Gmail addresses are used in a host of other things as well. Your Google account gives you access to your mailbox, Picasa Web Album, Facebook account, Google Play Store, YouTube, Google Drive and so many other things. So, if anyone gets access to your Google account, he will literally enter into your world. In other words, if your account is hacked, it gives access to a lot of your personal data including your mails, photos, videos, messages, bank account numbers, etc. Hence, it becomes essential to take care of your Google account. Here’s a four-step guide which will help you to make your Gmail account hacking-free:

  1. Choose a Strong Password: Passwords safeguard you against unauthorised access to your accounts. Avoid using your name, surname, addresses or names of your near and dear ones. For instance, names of places that you often visit, etc. should be avoided. Next, avoid passwords like 1234567, 987654, abcd1234 or anything that is very easy to remember or is of general nature. Instead, be unpredictable with your passwords. The best passwords are a combination of numbers, symbols, and upper and lowercase letters. Some instances for strong passwords can be: 5little_monkey, 2men_in_a_boat or 10_commanments, etc.
  2. Do Not Reuse Your Gmail Password on Other Websites: Most of us have a tendency to use the same password again and again on different websites. This should be avoided. Also, never use your Gmail account password as your debit card authentication password, or for registering on online shopping portals. Instead, keep them unique and separate.
  3. Follow the Two-Step Authentication Security System by Google: It is a great way to secure your Gmail account. The two-step authentication security system by Google provides a second layer of protection to prevent hackers from accessing your accounts. Your phone number will be helpful in this regard. In this authentication system, you will receive authentication codes on your registered mobile number every time you try to log in to your account. You can access your account safely by entering this code. If you specify your machine as ‘safe’ or ‘trusted’, then your email and password would suffice (if you log in from that system). But you have to enter the code, if you log in from another computer or phone. It is simple and dependable.
  4. Exercise Precaution: Make sure you run in-depth scans on a regular basis on your computer. You can also keep your anti-virus and anti-hacking programs up-to-date to protect your computer against infectious and destructive activities. Also avoid using public-used computers until it is absolutely essential for you. Besides, avoid opening unfamiliar, suspicious mails, and don’t respond to queries for your personal information such as your address and bank account details.

The abovementioned steps can help you save your personal information from being hacked.
