Free Wi Fi services in GurgaonCome September, and the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) will roll out Wi-Fi services at five locations in the city. This move has been interpreted as a calculated step towards a holistic implementation of Digital India initiative. According to MCG officials, this service will be made available latest by 16 September.

Airtel to Provide Wi-Fi Service in Gurgaon

India’s leading telecom giant Bharti Airtel has been awarded this contract from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon. The Wi-Fi services will be free for first 30 minutes. According to Bharti Airtel, “… it has won the mandate for the launch of Wi-fi services in Gurgaon … With this, Airtel has become the preferred partner to provide residents of the Millennium City an opportunity to connect to world-class internet experiences on the move”.

Since Airtel has qualified both in the technical and financial bid, a five-year contract has been awarded. According to the contract, the internet service provider will supply, configure and install Wi-Fi services. It will also provide a web based portal for the user logins and also maintain the logs of at least for last one year”.

Locations in Gurgaon to Get Free Wi-Fi Service

Wi-Fi services will be initiated from five locations – MG Road, Sadar Bazaar, Sector 29, Sirhaul Village and Leisure Valley Park. The residents will be provided with a minimum speed of 2 Mbps in all the five locations. On the choice of locations, MCG Commissioner Vikas Gupta said that the regions have been selected with the intent to bridge the digital gap between old and new Gurgaon.

Benefits for Gurgaon Residents

The residents of these five locations will be able to continue using Wi-Fi services post 30 minutes of free usage. However, they will be charged a very nominal amount. They will also be able to consume data from their data banks. The additional Wi-Fi charges will be announced later after the service gets rolled out. Users will also be able to buy online vouchers to continue with the Wi-Fi access.

According to Airtel, the Wi-Fi services will be an “open platform for mobile phones users with Wi-Fi compatible devices in these localities”.
