Dhirdham Temple: A Replica of the Pashupati Nath Temple

Location: Darjeeling, West Bengal

Travel to any part of the Indian Sub-continent, one thing is for sure, you are going to find at least one ancient Shiv Temple every where. Located just above the Toy Train Railway Station, Dhirdham Temple is one of the most beautiful temples I have ever come across. This colorful temple complex is the home of the most popular Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. It is one of the oldest temples in the town of Darjeeling.

The construction of Dhirdham Temple was accomplished by the king of Nepal, Purna Bahadur Pradhan in the year 1939. A Gorkhali Architect designed the architecture of the temple keeping in mind the Pashupatinath temple in Nepal. Thus, Dhirdham temple has a great resemblance to the Pashupati Nath temple which is one of the most sacred temples of Lord Shiva.

The temple looks phenomenal in its Tibetan Style structure painted in vivid colors like red, yellow and white. The exterior of the temple is like a multi-layered Pagoda surrounded by green trees and shrubs. As you enter the premises, glance at the splendid white statue of Lord Shiva which depicts his five expressions and the third eye collectively called “Panch Bakram Tri Netram”.

A beautiful landscape of hills and valleys can be enjoyed from behind the temple. Everyday an aarti is held at 8 in the morning and 6 in the evening. There are no boundations for the entry as people from all caste, creed and religion are allowed to take the blessings of the Lord. The temple serves as a special attraction in the month of February and March when the festival of Shivratri is celebrated with utmost gaiety and enthusiasm here.

As an incredible replica of the Pashupatinath Temple, Dhirdham Temple calls for a must visit!
